That’s 123. Number one hundred twenty-three.
Though she’s lost her tag, I still know who she is.
My name is Butch Horsford.
I’m a dairy and livestock farmer
here in Maromaku, New Zealand.
I’ve lived in the valley all my life.
I get up at 4:30 every day.
I start down here about 5:30.
Sometimes we get up late.
It doesn’t matter. I’m my own boss, so I don’t fire myself.
I wouldn’t say I love cows. I like working with them.
Just be careful if they mess; move out of the way. It stains.
I’d last about two days in an office,
and then I get really itchy to get outside.
Sometimes you’ve got to get down and get your hands dirty
and put in a bit of manual labor.
It’s not all sitting in the tractor seats.
I’m married to Karen Hold. We’ve been married 29 years.
We really enjoy life together.
Sweetie, did you spray the front ones?
When we first got married, she got some advice from her auntie.
“Don’t learn how to milk.”
She only did that for about three months.
And then she’s been milking cows ever since.
On the farm we’ve got dairy cattle and beef cattle,
sheep, chickens, dogs, a few pigs.
We have one cat; the rest of them are boarders.
I think that right from Adam, you know,
the Lord told us to take care of the earth.
Things are here for us to use, but
we need to be sure to actually take care of them.
That 132, she’s real quiet.
She always waits till last. She’ll be the last to come in.
Up you go, girl. I believe the Lord knows each of the animals.
I think He expects us to take care of them.
I learned when I was shearing full-time that
they weren’t worried about whether you did 200 or 150.
If the sheep were shorn right, they were happy for you to return
even if you were a bit slower than some of the others.
You’ve got to do a proper job.
I think it applies to everything: marriage, raising your children …
I believe good things take time.
I think a good marriage is not made in a year.
It’s made over 10, 20, 30 years of just
being consistently good in your marriage—
just the little things you do together over time.
I’m a dairy farmer. I’m an early riser.
I’ve been shearing all my life.
My name is Butch Horsford. And I’m a Mormon.
