Hi everybody. I'm Dr. David Reath, and I'm here to talk about this week's Truth-O-Meter
Tuesday question. And the subject is fat. This is the time of
year when we're all trying to get rid of some of that stuff.
And so what we said was this: That when you gain weight after puberty, you're creating
more fat cells. And the answer is false.
We have a set number of fat cells after puberty that we go through the rest of our life with.
If we eat more than we burn, in terms of calories, those fat cells get larger.
If we lose weight, the fat cells are getting smaller.
And this is also one of the reasons why procedures like CoolSculpting and liposuction work because
we're actually removing fat cells. So we can decrease a certain area of the body
where there are more fat cells than we want, or perhaps more fat cells that are out of
proportion with the rest of the body. So what you have after puberty is pretty much
what you're going to have and what you're going to stay with.
So perhaps that's a good reason, as youths, to be fit and try to watch weight, and kind
of get a leg up on the rest of your life. But let's find out who this week's winner
