#1 Banking for everyone. At BBVA, we are working towards a better future for people.
This is our vision.
Our commitment is based on generating proposals of value through what we know how to do best:
provide financial services to the greatest number of people possible.
We want to universalize financial services by making banking for everyone.
At BBVA we are working on two priority areas in this respect: financial inclusion and financial literacy.
But there is also our day-to-day activity.
This means integrating responsible management across the whole value chain,
from the design of products, their advertising and marketing to the management of their risks.
#2 Investing responsibly. The capacity of capital markets to assign and distribute resources
makes them a powerful agent for change.
At BBVA we think that promoting socially responsible investment is one of the most genuine expressions
of a financial institution’s corporate responsibility.
By incorporating social, environment and good governance criteria into our investment process
we combine long-term profitability with sustainable development.
To do this, we have encouraged our pension fund manager, as well as the BBVA staff retirement plan,
to sign the UN Principles for Responsible Investment.
This signature also constitutes a public commitment
that drives us forward and assists us in our process of continuous learning.
#3 Being eco-efficient. At BBVA we have a comprehensive policy on environmental issues.
Our Global Eco-Efficiency Plan 2008-2012 is organized around three priority areas:
climate change; energy efficiency; and care for the environment.
Among other objectives, we aim to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% by the end of the period of the plan.
The new corporate headquarters in Spain and Mexico are a clear example of our commitment.
Our aim is for these buildings to receive the LEED Gold environmental certification.
This will represent very significant implications for environmental questions.
For example, these projects will reduce energy consumption by between 25% and 30%,
and water consumption by between 30% and 50%.
#4 Financing responsibly. In 2009 BBVA has led the way in financing infrastructure
and energy projects in Latin America.
Infrastructures are essential to boost the economy
and at the same time to provide leverage for the integrated and sustained development of societies.
The BBVA Group has adhered to the Equator Principles since 2004.
This means we are committed to extending our vision of the projects we finance
and evaluating their impact on people and the environment.
This makes our projects more sustainable and more financially stable.
In 2009 all the operations we were involved in complied with these principles, regardless of the amount financed by the Group.
#5 Being simple and transparent. In terms of product design,
we have to continue to make the customer the focal point, working with transparency and simplicity.
We have taken great steps towards this end, but there is still much to be done.
One example of this simplicity is the Paga bien paga menos (pay well, pay less) credit card program in Bancomer.
This is a public offer, a public pledge that if you pay off your card on time
you will get the best interest rate on the market in an extremely simple scheme.
So far we have more than a million customers benefiting.
At BBVA we believe that today, more than at any other time,
financial activity has to be constructed on the principles of integrity, prudence and transparency.
Promoting banking for everyone all helps us in the task of re-imagining our business
at a time in which important changes are taking place in our societies.
But in addition, it puts the focus on our customers,
boosts innovation and connects us with public agendas and individual outlooks.
In short, it is an ambitious task that should form part of the daily agenda of each of those who work at BBVA.
