A challenge was laid today by Tainui for co-management of youth courts
at the launch of the 12th Rangatahi Court.
Tainui has shown their legal prowess,
however, the head of the Youth Court
believes the relationship has already started.
The Youth Court judges were given special seats today,
but Waikato-Tainui are seeking an equal partnership with the courts
in the long run.
This is the 12th Rangatahi Court in NZ.
The first was launched at Manurewa Marae in 2009.
I have seen the results
from Papakura and Kirikiriroa Marae.
It's a chance for us to see the benefits amongst ourselves.
50% of youth apprehended by police are Maori.
The aim is to create a connection with their culture on the marae.
Iwi getting true partnership in the justice system
is the long-term goal.
The short-term goal is to decrease the negative stats
that have young Maori on the wrong side of the fence.
Potaka Maipi, Te Karere.
