My name's Kyle Harper. I teach here at the University of Oklahoma in the
department of classics and letters. I also direct a program called the institute
for the american constitutional heritage. One of the things that makes OU so unique is our
program the institute for the american constitutional heritage. It's a program that was
started a little over two years ago by President Boren
to make OU a national leader in civic education.
We have an amazing faculty. We have amazing students and it's a place where people
come together to study history, law, and politics and it makes OU
different from any other campus.
One of the things that makes teaching college students particularly special is
that
they're at a part of their lives where they're becoming adults and their deciding
what they want to do
for the rest of their lives and so
as a teacher of history part of my role is to help them to understand their
unique moment in history and the kinds of responsibilities that gives them and the
kind of opportunities that gives them.
I was a student here myself and I think that helps me relate to the students and
remember what it's like
to be in college and to be at an exciting point in your life where you're able to
study whatever you want and able to decide what you want to do with the rest of
your life
this is a place where undergraduate education is truly valued and the kind of
investment we make our students makes an impact, but at the same time it is a top tier
research university where the faculty are engaging and cutting-edge important
significant types of research in all different ranges of fields in humanities
and sciences and social sciences so it's intellectually a place where
discoveries are happening and where those discoveries are passed on to our
students
