the center for academic success at lsu provides a multitude of resources and
programming to enhance the educational experience. Supplemental instruction or SI
is one resource that assists students in historically challenging courses such as
physics, chemistry, and biology. Hunter Chapman a senior at LSU majoring in Biology
and minoring in chemistry has been a supplemental instructor leader for three terms
in chemistry 1201
I came from a very small high school where I graduated from with only thirty eight other students
so when i came to the city of LSU I was pretty overwhelmed. There's probably
an average of seven-hundred students that take this course and needless to say this was an absolute
culture shock for me
to take this course as a first semester freshman
which is the same for the majority students in this course
but SI gives you the ability to create an environment that
helps the transition into college.
SI offers large group and individual sessions
in group sessions also known as open sessions SI leaders review course
material and because they were a student in the course they lead they are able to tailor
the subject matter to focus in on important topics and concepts
and individual sessions also known as office hours students receive one on one
tutoring from an SI leader and work in groups with their classmates. Students who attend
attend SI achieve at least a point five higher GPA than those who do not. In
2010 the difference was between a 2.71 and a 2.21 GPA
for those who took the time to attend SI. This can help students
stay in their field of choice keep their scholarships and become a
successful LSU graduate
not only will students improve their GPA, study strategies, confidence and
persistence in the courses with SI
but it will transfer into their future courses
improving their overall LSU GPA
SI leaders go through an intensive training at the start of each semester to obtain
and maintain certification. Information on effective learning and instruction strategies
provided by experts and previous SI leaders
because SI is an international program, LSU's leaders are able to collaborate
with others around the globe gathering great ideas on how to help college
students become better learners
as an SI leader I see the value of this program daily. It goes beyond just learning
material for the course. SI has the ability
to improve students' performance in all courses,
create strong long-lasting support groups and becoming a more confident
learner
so i am incredibly grateful to be a part of this program and i have benefited tremendously
as an SI leader and a student
therefore i strongly urge you to get involved wtih the program in any way possible.
