Male: At NS&I we run a Quarterly Savings Survey that tracks how people across Britain are
saving. We quiz about 2,500 people every three months and we ask them a range of questions
about their savings habits. The Tracker asks people how much they're saving, if anything
at all. We also ask people what they're saving for - say for a rainy day or for something
special like a holiday.
We ask people, have they got enough money to cope in an emergency if the worst should
happen. And we also ask people whether they're feeling more optimistic or more pessimistic
about how much they can save in the coming months.
We've been running the Savings Survey for over eight years now so we've got a lot of
data that we're able to look at over the long term. We look to see how it compares to previous
months, whether the amount people are saving is up or down, and we try and understand any
trends in the research. And then we're able to tell people about it. To give people a
clearer understanding of how people across Britain are saving.
The great thing about the Savings Survey is because it gives a really broad picture of
how people across Britain are saving, that if you're sitting at home it's a great way
of looking and thinking, well how am I doing in my own savings compared to people across
the nation.
