I'm in Adobe Illustrator and I want to get my document ready to go to press. Here I've
got a promotional poster for a cookbook that I've been working on, and I want to send it.
I want to make sure that everything goes outside the bleed lines. It looks like everything's
okay. Here, because Illustrator doesn't handle my
margins, I need to be careful. This might not be enough space, and I might risk the
S getting cut off on my text over here. I should verify with my printer that this will
be okay. Because it's a poster, it should be fine. Things like books and catalogs that
have folds that run further into the margins may have additional problems.
Here I want to check the resolution and color space of my images. When I click on an image
with the direct selection tool, that white arrow, I can see that it's in CMYK color mode
and that it has a dpi of 112. This isn't sufficient resolution. Printed documents need to have
at least 300 dpi or higher, so I'll need to talk with the photographer and see if I can
get the originals of these image to have the high enough resolution to send off to the
press. Once I've corrected everything and I've made
sure that there are no font errors by going to Type and Find Font ... I have no errors
here ... I'm ready to send the document to the press. I go to File and Save As, and I
change my format to an Adobe PDF. I want to use the Press Quality setting, and I also
want to add printer's marks. I need to have trim, and I need to use the document bleed.
Adobe Illustrator won't add bleed marks, but that's okay. I just click Save PDF and I'm
good to go.
