I like my job.
My name is Maciej. I'm 22.
I found my job by accident.
A friend of mine hired me as a kitchen porter.
And from a kitchen porter I became a cook.
I simply started to climb the career ladder in gastronomy.
A kitchen porter's job isn't complicated:
plates, plates, glasses, plates...
and polishing cutlery.
In free moments I used to go to the kitchen
to have a look at what the cooks are doing.
I was curious as every young man in a new job at the beginning.
I used to observe them while they were cooking and making desserts.
One day they had so much to do
that they asked me to make a tiramisu.
When I made a tiramisu, they said
that I'm a kitchen assistant beginning from the next week
and that I don't need to work at the sink anymore
but in the kitchen. That's how it started.
There were also elder cooks
of my father's age.
They were in their fourties.
They taught me how to cook and told me:
"Ask if you don't know...
but remember that you may also ask in a wrong moment".
Cause if you ask too many questions you may get it in the neck.
Cause you're bothering too much.
I could learn from them
and from my own experience.
Cooking every day and seeing how different food reacts,
how different meat reacts,
how to use knifes,
how to use chopping boards, pots, frying pans and other utensils
you become familiar with it.
Sometimes I take a glance at
TV programs or cookbooks.
You can find there something interesting or new.
Others combine some new dishes or tastes.
Before at home I used to help my mom to cook
as usually at home... That's all...
I had no problems with it.
If you do something good
and you like it, you become to develop yourself in this area.
I can say that cooking has already become my passion.
I like it and I don't get tired while cooking anymore.
What I like about this job are
many possibilities to meet people...
many interesting people...
Thanks to them you can develop yourself.
I've met many people...
Thanks to them I could work in many restaurants without problems.
They opened a door to many places for me,
took me to a show trip,
invited me to some meetings
or hired me to catering services and different events.
You meet new people all the time.
I could have started from this profession because it made me take notice.
Cause it was not only great to cook.
Sometimes I got it in the neck and fell back to the ground.
I learned that I'm not an "immortal youth"
who can make miracles on their own.
I started to work as a cook
just before I was 18. Now it's almost 5 years.
There is nothing particularly difficult or special in this job.
It seems difficult when you look at other people cooking.
It seems complicated when you look at others preparing dishes.
But in fact if you do it every day, you learn step by step.
Cause it's such a huge knowledge, so many elements
are included into cooking process,
that it's hard to learn it all before you enter the kitchen.
Even if you've learned it before, everything looks different in real
for some people.
You don't need to know many things before.
It's the best to learn in practice.
You can start cooking in every moment of your life.
There are no contraindications.
All you need are two working hands... or even one hand
and you can cook.
