What is the difference between a Keyword and a Descriptor?
Keyword searching is the default option for searching ERIC.
This approach is a common one; however it can return too many
or too few results, or results that are not relevant.
Try a keyword search on “multiyear teaching” to find out more about the practice of having
teachers advance with their current students to the next grade level.

Results include records with the phrase "multiyear teaching," but overlook
relevant records that do not use the phrase.
You will get more precise search results if you use Descriptors, standardized terms
used to describe the topics in a document.
You can find the correct Descriptors by looking them up in the ERIC Thesaurus.

Now enter "Looping (Teachers)," the Descriptor used to index the topic of multiyear teaching.

You do not need to know the exact words the author chose to describe a concept.
Descriptors help you pinpoint works with a common topic or theme.
