If you’re eligible, Baby Bonus is a payment
that can help when you have a baby
or adopt a child. The amount of Baby Bonus
you can get, changed on 1 July 2013. Baby Bonus is now $5000 if the
child you’re claiming for is your first child or $3000 if they
aren’t your first child. This is because most parents reuse items like
cots, prams and change tables for younger siblings. If you have a
multiple birth (including twins) you can get $5000 for each child even if
you already have other children.
You can’t get both Baby Bonus and
Parental Leave Pay for the same child.
But if you’ve already claimed Baby Bonus, you may wish to change
your claim to Parental Leave Pay if you’re eligible for it. You can
change your mind as long as you let us know before you get your first
Baby Bonus payment. Just tell us when you give us proof of your
child’s birth or through Centrelink Online Services. You can use the Paid
Parental Leave Comparison Estimator at humanservices.gov.au/estimators
to help you choose the best payment for your family. Read more
