The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq,
Minister of Health, launched the latest phase of the
Government of Canada's national "Eat Well Campaign"
which promotes healthy eating and healthy weights.
Today I am pleased to announce that we're building on the
momentum of the national "Eat Well Campaign"
that helps parents and children adopt healthier eating habits.
To further extend the research of this campaign we're also
partnered with the Retail Council of Canada,
The Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers,
The Heart and Stroke Foundation,
Dieticians of Canada and other organizations to promote
healthy eating.
It is with tremendous pride that I say that all of our grocery
members have partnered with Health Canada in support of
the "Eat Well Campaign" in ensuring a tremendous
reach for today's messages.
Our members from coast to coast include Costco,
Co-op Atlantic, Federated Co-op, Loblaw Canada, Safeway, Sobeys,
Walmart, and of course, Metro who has graciously hosted and
they're all committed to the campaign.
Several years ago we jointly launched a nutrition facts
education campaign and this is a really important campaign for
Canadians because what it does is improve the awareness and
provide tools to consumers so that they can make better
choices at the grocery stores for their families.
We know that eating well is one of the greatest things that
people can do to actually affect their overall health.
Roughly one third of heart disease and stroke is
attributable to what we eat.
So again it makes it very obvious for us to be working
with organizations like Health Canada.
By participating in initiatives such as Health Canada's
"Eat Well Campaign" we not only look to encourage consumers
to take a more healthy approach to wellness and weight
management but also to show that our retailers are concerned
about what products the customers are buying.
The real goal of the campaign is to ensure that Canadians have
the right information to make informed choices for
their lifestyle.
What we're trying to do here is to ensure that there are common
messages that are used by consumers whether they're
watching TV, whether they're in their newspaper,
whether they're in their shopping environment
or whether they are seeing material that's coming from
Health Canada itself.
So it's bringing together common messages to take the
mystery out of the information about healthy eating.
