Hey, guys. Van here from RCNightmare.com. Today I’m going to show you how to mount
a tire onto a rim to make a wheel.
Alright, so let’s get started. This happens to be a new build that we’re mounting the
tires for, but you may need to do this if you need to change treads due to wear or whatnot,
or say you just wanted to get some new rims with some fancy spokes or what have you.
So, basically, here’s a tire that’s already been mounted. Pretty straight forward –
there are three parts:
1. The rim 2. The foam insert, and
3. The actual tire tread
What we need to do first is put the foam inside the tire and then put everything onto the
rim. So, go ahead. The foam is actually – when it’s uncompressed like this – just
about the size of the tire, so you’re going to need to compress it quite a bit to get
it within the tire here. Try not to have any one side or section of the foam compressed
too much more than any other side, because you want the amount of material in here to
be pretty even, right?
So, as you can see, I just wedged the foam in there and then I’m just going around
the tire to make sure that the edge of the tire is outside. So, with the foam pretty
much in place, I’m just going to run it through my fingers like this – stretch it
out a little bit – just to ensure it is fitting in there correctly. So, there you
have that.
Here’s the rim – here’s the outside of the rim. Where this is important on this
tire is – this is the outside part of the tire. So, we’re just going to slide it in
this way. Just like getting the foam insert inside the tire, this is a little bit bigger
than the area, but everything stretches. So, that’s really all there is to it – just
stretch the heck out of it here.
And what I’m doing is I’m trying to get the little lip here on the end of the tire
– there’s one on the other side here too – as you can see, right there, there’s
a little lip – onto the grooves on the tire. Let me slide this up. The rim has two grooves
– one right there, and one right there – and the tire has the accompanying little
lip that fits into it. So, put this back. So, I’ve gotten part of it on there. So,
I’m just going around the tire and pretty much pulling on the tread to get that little
lip into place. There, the front looks pretty good. Now, for the back. So, you can see it’s
totally off - this one’s going to be a little easier...there. So just work your way around
the rim here with your fingernails, getting everything in place. Once it’s in there,
just ensure that everything is consistent.
So, from here, the next thing you would do is actually glue the tire tread to the rim
for better traction. Now, this is the front tire of a buggy, so having them glued…not
necessarily that important. It’s more important if these were the drive wheels, because you
don’t want all that torque just causing the rim to spin within the tire, so it would
be good to glue them. And then you can watch our tire gluing video, see how to do that.
But, there you have it. That’s how you go about assembling a tire from its parts. If
