for alumni in your community segment where today we profile
BCC alum who has made his way to the top of the health care industry latter
serving as president a Massachusetts hospital
hi my name is Richard Aubt Bristol community class of 1972
I group in Bedford graduated from Holy Family high school
I had a great experience growing up in new bedford is a great city to grow up in a
I group up in the south end
always got a chance go to beaches was a nice place to live you know
so it was a very good experience as a young person I was very interested in
music
and did what a music as a young person I'm had fun doing that
and once I graduated from high school
went on to college at BCC by chose BCC because
a coming out of New Bedford my parents
parents didn't have a lot of oppertunity to go away to school bcc was a
good
a fantastic local alternative for me it allowed me to think about what I want to
do with my life starting in a
in a college costar home were I could communte communting was very important
so it was really the best opportunity at the time
for me as I grew up coming out of New Bedford the atmosphere
at BCC was very supportive the classes were really small
the buildings were separated there were acutely two building's you had to drive between both buildings
buildings
sometimes finding a parking space was not always easy
but the the students I went to school with were great and the teachers were at
the time the professors I had
one of the greatest things was they were very very supportive very encouraging I
think one of the
fantastic experiences I had a BCC was they developed your independence the
developing confidence
and that school allow me to continue
my confidence and continue myself in my education so it's a great experience
after BCC I went to what is
U-mass Dartmouth when I was there is SMU graduated in 1975 with a bachelor's
degree
Natural Science and Nursing and then I
subsequently went on to to Boston University received a master's degree
National Science degree there and went to Suffolk you have an Executive
MBA
the interest in health care had a lot to do with the opportunities that exist in
health care back in the
early seven it still exist today it's a great
opportunity to to for me for me to use my professional skills it was a great
opportunity
to find the right kinda positions there's lot too at the time when I was in school
you know what a job security which is important somebody like me coming out in
New Bedford
and there's a lot of variability in the work there's always
all kinds a worlds you can travel down so a lot of differant roads
once I graduated from SMU I started as a staff nurse in actually in Fall River
at the old Truesdale hospital and
then went on to work at programs in Boston include Boston City Hospital
went back to graduate school finish graduate school
went into the nursing administration
world did that at mortin hospital in Tauntion and then
eventually came to south shore hospital 22 years ago where been now for 22 years did
various positions here in the executive
world and I've been president and chief executive officer of south shore hospital
and the V&A in the hospice for the last seven years
south shore hospital has been a fantastic place to
it been my professional life the last seven years as president we've
grown considerably from about $250 million dollar
hospital today to this year we will deliver over four hundred million
dollars worth the care
we are what third-biggest emergency room in the state today the third-biggest
maternity services in this part of massachusetts today we've had a lot of different
programs
brand new cancer center brand new surgical programs brand new arthopetic service
that will open up in about a year it's been a very exciting
experience in one of the great things about working in healthcare especially
in massachusetts is that there's always tremendous need
and patience want to get there care locally and as we redesigned programs
we'd continue to grow we employ you know about thirty eight hundred people
so a lot of growth for south shore hospital the last seven years
been no we've been able to serve more people than we ever could have imagined
it been a great experience I'm married my wife and I met in high school
we've been married almost 35 years
now I don't know if you want to add that I have two sons who both now on to college
one graduated from Saint Michael's in vermont and the other one graduated from
Johnson Wales and Rhode Island and
we live in Dedham and we've been in Dedham for a long time
although we still come down to New Bedford cause both of are parents
still live New Bedford the north end so we
down in New Bedford a lot and one of my sons actually when he was in high school
took a course at BCC in summer time in computer sciences
that's his background now that he's out of school is computer in graphic arts and
so he had a great experience there too I think like a lot a young people at the
time
I was concerned about that was I able to go on to college and do a good job
a lot of my friends and go to college most my friends as a matter of fact didn't go to college
which is not uncommon for time period I grew up in
New Bedford so even taking the college route is not that typical so
the was I think at a minimum
just a little concerned about confidence and what BCC provided was a very
an atmosphere that it that encouraged you encourage you
believed in you the provided the professors is provided a little confidence that you
could
develop your your own skills your writing skills verbal skills are you
thinking skills
and that confidence i think is what led to my ability to go onto
to SMU Umass Dartmouth and then obviously to graduate school
programs so BCC was the starting point but
more than just a starting point was the it was the building block
that allowed me to get to where I am today it's a very that was a very
important part of my life
