"Critical Review: The Bath of Diana 1855, Oil on canvas, by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Carot.
In this painting, I see five figures bathing and two figures on the shore with the dogs,
by a lake with trees and hills in the background. The event appears to be happening at dawn
or dusk by the lighting source in the painting. The colors of the painting are greens, browns,
whites and flesh tones. By the title of the painting, I gather that the painting is about
the bath of Diana, the woman who appears in the middle that the others are bathing. She
appears someone who is wealthy or powerful or important because the other subjects in
the painting are gathered around her bathing her and the others on the shore are watching.
The painting might have expressed the simplicity of life and enjoying nature. It appears to
be a Romantic painting by the relationship of the subjects with nature and the majestic
lighting that is portrayed in the painting. This painting makes me feel relaxed and at
peace. It makes me feel like going out and walking and enjoying the beautiful weather.
I feel this way because of the warm colors and the light source in the painting and the
water, and when I look at this painting, I can almost feel the water and the sunlight
on my skin. This is a good work of art because of the harmonious lines in the painting. The
artist uses diagonal lines in the trees that surround Diana and the subjects point to the
point of focus. The dogs and the people on the shore are looking and pointing to the
subject as well. The artist also uses horizontal lines in the background and the horizon giving
me a feeling of peace and tranquility. The artist also puts a big emphasis on the relationship
between the bathers and the nature by making the bathers seem small and the background
large and overpowering. This work of art has given me a new perspective on my day. I wake
up thinking about all the work I have to do and all the stresses in my life but this painting
reminds me to just enjoy the moment and relax and take sometime for myself. The museum's
discussion of the painting says it is a picture of the goddess Diana bathing with nymphs and
dogs. It also, as I did previously, talks about the use of the browns, greens and neutral
colors that the artist used and talks about the relationship Carot had with other Romantic
artists such as Delacroix which gives me the impression that Carot is a Romantic painter
as well. I think that by reading the museum's exert I was very close to being right on about
this painting.
