Lately there's been so much talk about child abductions, of children getting
molested. Just yesterday we brought you the story of a man accused of sexually
assaulting four children under the age of ten. The victims' families knew the
suspect in that case. There are ways to protect your kids here's Eleven News Reporter,
Catherine Bilkey.
At a workshop run by Kidpower of Colorado, these kids learn how to reduce their risk
of emotional, physical, and *** abuse.
In this lesson they're learning to set boundaries with adults they know.
That could prevent them from being victims. Ninety percent of the
situations that happened to kids are with people they know.
They're having fun, but they're also learning important lessons.
"Be assertive." And one of the ways they're doing that, is by telling adults when they feel
uncomfortable. "Please don't touch me!"
If that doesn't work, they were told to say "I'm going to tell!".
And if the touching persists, to even lie, and say "I won't tell as long as you stop."
"I promise not to tell if you stop."
"Very good, and what are you really going to do?" "TELL!"
The kids learn to go to their parents when anyone was being
inappropriate,
and to keep telling them or other trusted adults, until their concerns are taken
seriously. Catherine Bilkey, KKTV, 11 News.
