My name is Rebekha. I am a student at the Colorado Center for the Blind. I came here
because before going to college, I need to learn skills to move forward.
At the Center, I take self-defense classes. It is one of my favorite classes. I learn
how to defend myself from being grabbed off the street or attacked. I learn how to escape
being pinned and to effectively fight back. I am more aware of my surroundings. Moving
my body in martial arts is a form of therapy. This has increased my assertiveness and boldness.
I am independent and use public transportation. I have learned how to use echo location by
listening for sounds that bounce off of buildings and other objects. I also listen for traffic.
People in traffic often yell out things like "go!". I don't trust their perception of what
is happening.
Just like everyone else, I enjoy going places. I love chocolate. I found this little candy
shop nearby the Center and I go there for their dark chocolate. It is my favorite kind
of chocolate and they make it there in the shop. I also found a rose garden near the
Center. It is a peaceful place for me to go. When I am there, I can get my thoughts together.
I think about my future. I plan to go to college and become a recreational therapist so I can
work with children. I want to make a difference in the lives of kids who need help overcoming
their challenges. I think I am becoming a good example of self-empowerment.
