Hello and welcome to the first in a series of episodes that will give you a close look
at the Sleep Portal Web Application, hosted here in the Program of
Sleep Medicine Epidemiology in the Division of Sleep Medicine at
Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School!
The Sleep Portal provides access to underlying sleep research data and is based on a data
access architecture called Physio-MIMI, developed at Case Western
Reserve University in collaboration with Marshfield Clinic,
University of Michigan, and University of Wisconsin. The Physio-MIMI project was spear-headed
by a collaboration between Susan Redline, and GQ
Zhang.
Today, we'll be taking a look at the series of steps required to gain access to the Sleep
Heart Health Limited Access Dataset.
Here you can see the Sleep Medicine Epidemiology blog that we keep updates on current projects
and happenings here at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. Once you navigate to this page go
to the Sleep Reading Center and click on the Sleep Heart Health Study since that's what
we want to access.
We can scroll down a little bit and read some of the background information, and then we
come down to the Data Access portion, which I'll be running through today.
The first thing that we want to do, is we want to download the Limited Data Distribution
Agreement form. Click and open it up.
The form covers some background information on the
Sleep Heart Health Study. We'll be filling out the bottom portion of the form.
For Recipient, enter your name and organization, and sign on the line here. For Principal Investigator,
enter your PIs contact information, or if you do not have a PI, enter your contact information.
The completed form can then be either faxed or scanned and emailed to Susan Surovec, whose
information is located at the bottom of the form.
Next, we will need to register for an account on the SHHS Portal.
So if we scroll back up on the page we can see one of the project sites we have is the
Sleep Heart Health Study Portal. We'll go ahead and click on that.
At this point, if you have a Google Account, you can click the google logo in the top right
corner to register. If you don't have a Google Account, you can click "Register here!" located
right under the login.
We'll be going using this second approach. Fill out your Name, Email, and Password and
click Sign Up.
We use secure https to encrypt your password before it is sent across the internet.
Once we've registered, we'll notice it say that you need to sign in or sign up before
continuing. Essentially what it's doing here is you've signed up, but an admin has not
approved your account yet.
So for example if we go and enter our email and our password, we'll see that our account
wasn't activated.
Once your Data Distribution Agreement form has been processed, you will receive email
notification that your account has been given access to the Sleep
Portal. You can then type in your email and password and you'll be
redirected to the Hybrid Search interface.
So we are going to go ahead and login again having received that email. Click Login. We
can see that we are presented with the initial Hybrid search interface.
In next couple of episodes we'll take an in-depth look at the Hybrid search interface and capabilities!
