Piye Piye! Dan from Timid Monster here, and today we're taking a break from our usual
sci-fi shenanigans to talk about something that's very near and dear to our hearts.
The amazing country of Indonesia.
August 17th is Indonesia's independence day.
It marks the day in 1945 when the Indonesian people stood up and threw off centuries of foreign and Dutch rule.
To celebrate, we're taking to the streets of Memphis, Tennessee to test people's knowledge of the worlds fourth most populous country.
And, we're also going to be sampling one of the regions most infamous delicacies...
The durian.
Let's go!
Alright. We have our first durian victims. Alright guys.
Dig into that, get yourself a big handful of it. It's very soft and kind of mushy.
Yeah. Get in there. Get some.
-That's good enough. -Yeah. Woops! Alright, get you some. We'll do it on three, ok?
Oh man...
Oh no, get a bigger piece. Come on, man!
Now, that's the seed. You don't want to bite the seed.
Now, this is good for, you know, man and wife. If you know what I mean.
So I want you guys to dig in and get a big ol' piece.
It's fruit. It'll be a treat.
-I want this one right here. -Alright, grab that part.
On three. 1... 2... 3...
-Alright, that's good enough. -1... 2... 3...
-What's that taste like? -I don't know how I feel about this.
[handed a bottle of water] Thank you.
-Let's see... -Come on Brian!
What does that taste like? What do you think?
Mango, a little bit.
Not bad. It's kinda sweet.
-You want some more? -No straight!
-No thank you! -Give it a shot, try it.
Get it all in there.
Ride it out! Ride it out!
What's it taste like?
Tastes like banana pudding!
Tastes like...I don't know the words.
Like, onion and garlic, and...
-No, it tastes like a bad banana mixed with mango. -Bad banana with mango?
-Yeah, maybe a rotten mango? -Rotten mango.
The good news here is that you're ready for a night of wild passion now that you've had your durian.
You've had your dose of aphrodisiac.
You ready?
But not with me. I mean in general.
Ok, he's good.
So, we've got the mystery globe here, with the country names blocked out.
Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country. Do you think you can find it on here for me?
South America?
Is Indonesia in South America?
Think it's up there in Europe?
Is it on Africa?
Police say 'no.'
-In there somewhere. -I think it's right there.
Part of India, maybe?
Here somewhere?
He's thinking in here, maybe? This whole big chunk?
-It's this whole stretch right here. -Above Australia.
That's Indonesia. It's the worlds fourth most populous country. Isn't that incredible?
Let me prepare you for your trip to Indonesia. Let me teach you some words, ok?
So the first word is how they say "hello" over there. The pronunciation is a little tricky. It's "halo!"
And you have to say it like you're very happy to see somebody. "Halo!"
"Halo!"
So now we're going to say "Thank you" And it's "Terima kasih."
"Terima kasih!"
He's like a pro! "Terima kasih."
-And that translates as "receive love." -That's beautiful.
Alright, the next one is "Aku mau ek-ek."
No, you didn't say what it means. I don't know what that means.
-It doesn't matter what it means. -What is it? "Aku" what?
"Aku mau ek-ek."
Very good!
"Aku mau ek-ek."
And you have to say it like you're happy. "Aku mau ek-ek!"
That means I need to go poo-poo.
The last word is how they say "freedom" over there. They say it very excited because they're very happy about their freedom. They say "merdeka!"
Alright, so say it really big. Like you mean it. "MERDEKA!"
"MERDEKA!"
Close enough.
Selamat hari kemerdekaan, Indonesia!
Indonesia is a beautiful country. And it is filled with the most kind, generous, wonderful people. The best I've ever met in my entire life.
