True Tea: your questions, my brutal honesty.
Hey guys, it's Kat and it's time for your weekly dose of True Tea.
Today, I'm drinking chai. It's delicious, it's kinda sweet, it's a little hot.
Loves it, loves, loves, loves it!
And I'm so happy that I get to wind down with you at the end of the week
and start up again on Monday. If you're not already subscribed to my channel,
and you wanna get True Tea every single week in your subscription box,
be sure to hit that "Subscribe!" button. Anywho, let's jump right into today's question:
"Hey Kat! How do you feel about heterosexual actors taking on homosexual roles?
I sorta feel like straight people playing gay characters
are taking away roles from gay people
who may already have a hard time finding acting roles. What do you think?"
Alright, now first of all, I am not a gay man,
so I don't feel like I can really lead this conversation, but of course, I have opinions.
But I wanna say that if you are a gay man and you guys have a position on this,
please lead the conversation in the comment box below.
I wanna know what you guys think about this
'cause obviously, I'm... there's a lot about this that I'm not gonna know about.
Um, so I feel very similar to this... oop! [chuckling] I hit my light [chuckling]
I feel very similar to this as I do, um, trans on people playing trans characters.
I feel like I don't really have a hard and fast
"People should never play these roles if they are not the thing".
I think that a lot of acting is about becoming and embodying something
that you ne... you know, usually are not.
And, um, there are plenty of examples of, um, gay characters...
no, gay actors who have played straight characters
and have done a really convincing job like [...] was convincing.
Sorry, I just clocked my... my language [...]. But you know what I mean?
Like people who I've like watched on television
who I would have... I had no clue that they were gay and I looked them up
and I found out they're gay. Like there was the... the guy on "The Office",
where I recently like looked up and discovered he was a gay man
and I was like "Oh! Okay, work" [chuckling]
Um, so anyway, so yeah, I don't really have a hard and fast like I'm against it,
but my issue of course is that it takes money away from,
um, gay actors who are looking for jobs, right.
Um, I also think there's something to be said about, um, people wanting, um...
Like for example, going back to the Stonewall movie, right,
um, the actor who played, um, the main character,
the main gay character is a straight man and he was kinda casted by the director
really as like a stand-in for him. And of course, he is like this hyper-masculine,
you know, ideal that I think a lot of gay men look at an aspire towards, right.
Um, so I guess if there is kinda like that issue of,
you know, especially the situation where a gay man has power over the creative,
he opts to put someone in that role he deems as being more manly,
more, um, representative of, you know, his type of, um, you... you know, gayness,
which I think, you know, hey, you do you boo.
Um [chuckling at the same time] but I don't know.
I just... I... I feel like, um, you know, that... I don't know girl.
Honestly, I don't really feel qualified to answer this question.
I'm like sitting here, trying to answer it and I don't know if I really feel qualified.
So I probably gonna have to step out of this conversation
and tell you guys that you guys should lead it. I am not necessarily against it,
but also, um, I think that there should be more gay men playing gay characters,
lesbian women playing lesbian characters
'cause I do believe that there is a layer of reality that's brought to the table.
If you are a gay man, I wanna know what you think about this.
Give me your true tea in the comment box below. As per usual, if you guys want my true tea,
