the we're back with shari Cunningham is executive director of the sailors parent
Society an organization even talking about that offers a
many different kinds of services to cancer patients and the sales area
so but to support I love these efforts I love you and your group
you have a terrine I am sure other fundraisers throughout the year but
upcoming is a to reunite
the trivia night is coming up on March eighth this is our sixth one
we've raised over fifty thousand dollars
and in the prior five years that we've done it so it's a big fundraiser for us
because we are very small organization we have two full-time staff members
and then volunteers who support us in the work we do
so it's a big undertaking for us
but so where is that every night and how can people
get out the details trivia night is that the electric Electrical Workers Hall
which is on Elizabeth right off of Hampton Avenue
there's information on our website which I believe is on the screen
as well as our phone number which is also on the screen
a as far as either helping
are buying in Table which he would really appreciate yeah how many people
usually a 10-year Treasury 9
usually over 300 us a lot yeah
some healthy competition going on there yeah yes so
yes so it's a nice crowd yeah and everybody has a good time
yeah it sounds like a yeah I've been talking about all the different services
that you provide to over 2,000 cancer patients and their families each year
yes multiply that times the 65 years here
you Bandai you've been in our inner-city working with these patients so how
is your I seems like there's a lot of different groups said provide difference
types of services to cancer patients and say nice how is
the singer's parents are very different I'm there really aren't any other
organizations that provide the scope of services that we do
and there are few others that may help with
and maybe medication are a
one or two other kinds of things but there aren't
any that provide nutritional supplements and provide transportation and provide
prescription assistance for uninsured and a sick room equipment and all those
things
so where a were unique in that way and we're unique to Saint Louis
their aren't organizations across the country
a that do that kind of work so we were founded by a group of women who wanted
to see
patient services in 1949
and they were diligent in their work
and a we're keeping it going nasa somebody with the new cancer diagnosis
may contact you yes and explain it
into their course a conversation I guess you learn what services you have them
they may need
great and vice versa a so if a patient family member
a referring agency calls last two to
have a patient enrolled we've got a referral form that
really is basic information that we need just to get the process started
we do contact the patients oncologist
to find out if what they requesting or what
the social worker whoever's making the referral is requesting is appropriate
for the patients care on
and and then once that's all verified then we can start services
pretty much immediately usually once we've made a you know God verification
from me
position as we can start services
sometimes for transportation the next day but
usually by the next week if it's something that we're delivering your
cell
and there's to have you in the office full-time right and both have you
for twenty years you've been with the organization see you know your your
patience well you know the services and that's poor people in same as you know
the in college it's obviously
yes and so how many volunteers to rely and I can imagine it's got to be a
a lot and we do I've got several people who come in the office who helped pick
up the slack
I'm because they're straight and YES on that and
we have people who help a on
through various ways that their at their own churches
and and social organizations
making people aware about us we have what's %uh volunteers who help on trivia
night and put together our special events
so we rely on them to get the job done a great way for
people in our community to get involved in helping you
at your group is doing so much and I'm what a great way to give back to the
community south
