Welcome back to nature time with animals. Here we are in New Orleans, Louisiana with
a beautiful German Shepherd. What is she chasing?
Yes, these canines have long been known for their tracking and hunting skills, but this
pup is after something else. If we pause the frame, you'll notice what
appears to be a regular dragonfly. But it's not what she sees she's after, rather
what she hears. These seemingly ordinary dragonflies are buzzing
something quite extraordinary at a frequency that's perfectly audible to a dog like Heidi,
but outside the range of normal human hearing. Fortunately, with science and a few specially
calibrated microphones, we can catch a glimpse of what's got this pup so stirred up.
(dragonflies whirring) With a little work combining the songs of
these various flies together, we get this exquisite jazz music.
Little is known about the Jazz-Fly, although scientists have discovered a high concentration
in New Orleans. Some locals purport that the flies concentration in the area led to the
birth of Jazz itself, while others still claim that the flies are simply mimicking the sounds
of the city. It's a question science may never be able
to answer. There is however, no question in this dog's
taste in music.
