For today's demonstration I'm going to request a video from Minerva and then a book from
MaineCat. I just watched the most recent movie version of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, and want
to request other versions of the movie for comparison's sake. Let's get started.
We'll start at the library's homepage. In the middle of this screen there is a box
to start your search in either the CM library catalog, Minerva, or MaineCat.
For this demonstration's sake we'll assume I've searched CMCC for material and know that
we don't own what I want. So I'll start by clicking in the Minerva radio button, which
will search 59 Maine libraries, including public, academic libraries such as all the
other community college libraries, special libraries and K-12 libraries.
Now I'll click the drop down arrow to change the kind of search I'd like to do.
I'll search by title. And I'll type Anna Karenina, notice I don't
have to capitalize. And at this point you can either use your enter key or the search
Minerva box to the right. Minerva has given us quiet a few options to
look at. Lets click this first line as there are a number of entries here.
Notice the icons on the left which tell us if we've found a book, CD, DVD, Blue-ray,
etc. Here's one I haven't seen before. I'll pick
this by clicking on the title.. I can tell from this page that I want to order
this, so I'll click on the request button. You only need to add your first name to this
form. And your patron barcode, which is the 14 digit
number on the back of your CMCC id. You have to activate this number at the library before
you can use it as your library card. Click submit
Minerva says my request was successful. Requests take roughly 2 -- 5 business days to arrive;
and when it does I'll get a note in my CMCC email, telling me I can pick it up. Bring
your ID when you come to pick it up, you'll need it. Now we'll click on regular display
to get back to the catalog. In the interest of time, we'll pretend that
I've gone through all the results in Minerva, and that I'm ready to search the larger state-wide
catalog MaineCat searches over 100 libraries in Maine including the Universities, Bates,
Bowdoin, Colby, the largest Public libraries and all of the Minerva libraries.. We'll pick
Search MaineCat here. I'll search by keyword
Because I'm interested in finding the screenplay to the movie I just saw
And I'll add 'screenplay' to my keywords and select 'search'
Let's scroll down and look for a screenplay Number 5 looks good. I'll select it
This is exactly what I wanted, and I can see Bates has an available copy, so I'm going
to click 'request this item' to order it. Unlike Minerva, MaineCat makes you pick your
library when ordering material. Here's my home library, so I'll select it.
And click 'submit' Type your first name
And the barcode number on the back of your CMCC ID
Click 'submit' And MaineCat lets me know my request will
be coming from Bates. I'll receive an email in my CM email when it arrives, and I'll bring
my ID with me when I go to check it out.
