well come since twenty twelve on the others that were carmichael short to be
with you uh... uh... all year long morning covering politics in a way that
nobody else is doing it we have to yesterday on the show in ilya shannon
who's going to be uh... really is as we speak running
uh... for the congressional seat in the tenth congressional district of illinois
will be joined later in the show
bite henry waxman the representative of from california
uh... the venerable henry waxman he's been there as long as it is congress has
been there
a couple political tidbits were in the middle of sort of came gate right now
it's the first uh... first time we've used the gate suffix
and twenty twelve n im
gonna try not to use that ever again uh... what what's going on with herman
cain is uh... it will play out in the way that it plays out of course i find
it interesting that the only remembered on monday that he had a we have so we
have we did settle with those women uh... it did it boggles my mind that it
takes politicians so long to actually come out and tell the truth
uh... who took pictures of himself with the shirt off and flexing and doing
those things uh... on face book and on twitter i guess i or i have maybe then
you too but that's not but he admitted he said i did it and he resigned well i
i always credited him uh... for that uh... it's a refreshing thing in
politics when people admit it but i guess the fact that he resigned the
speaks to why people don't do it why they try and press on and and the finger
wagging uh... could only make you think of one person one herman candidate
yesterday at the national press club in any case out what i find them what they
show uh... is going to look at it in a different way uh... what what the soap
opera play out as the will but the politics of it is it is so important
uh... whose
stands to gain when you look at that to the four candidates uh... that stand to
gain and model of the three or four sb intended to stand to gain fifteen should
fall course herman cain unjust was ahead by one point
in our local i he's the leader of the aisle of the
in a poll in iowa for the caucus is coming up in january this disease
serious candidate he doesn't have the
money as a candidate the repairing that romney do
uh... but his
seriousness comes not only because people in the republican party find him
legitimate find him a complex find about spoken i would also becomes
it's also is that that the people are looking for an alternative to governor
romney uh... i do think though that mit romney uh...
does stand to gain here hasn't been able to clear thirty points anywhere uh...
his is standing and i was always questionable
uh... is is not romney's but anytime an alternative to the front runner to the
presumed for frontrunner falls by the wayside we're not saying the cane will
or has but whoa
if he is to do that
i think the front-runner gains here i think the people who were looking for an
alternative to the front-runner will go to some other candidates but i think
that romney will gain i'd also think that newt gingrich will gain gingrich
uh... has been rising in the pool
also lowly but he has shown about what in the debate area is he is getting
people to pay attention to what he is
and he does seem to be above the fray and i think that's helping i think he
said the best two weeks of the campaign so far uh... so any time that there is
again an alternative to romney they're going to go to some other alternate some
people are gonna go to romney
but when it will one false by the wayside they're going to go to somebody
else i think newt gingrich has a lot to gain it's interesting the n_b_c_ a_b_c_
news in the wall street journal did a
olin early october polling people as to who they are preference was uh... in the
presidential race
as well as to their second favorite what's out without herman cain the race
newt gingrich went from eight percent to twelve percent at the fifty percent
increase for newt gingrich and that was at a time when his numbers were down at
eight percent i think over the past few weeks is numbers of picked up
and if he's gonna take something away from someone it would be from someone
like herman cain interesting too that he and kane are meant to debate shortly and
one of the sort of all
lincoln-douglas style debates
uh... and it will be interesting to see how they are together they were on uh...
on face the nation i believe would bob schieffer together and they don't seem
to be mortal enemies update do you know gingrich's as we said is above the fray
in in the conversation about this race and i think the debates have have shown
that there people were always going to have problems with newt gingrich on many
different levels but i do think that there are voters are going to say we
still don't want mit romney just because herman mccain is in this race we don't
see repair is viable
and we do see newt gingrich is in
store republican of who can do you know whose worthy of our vote i do think that
he's going to take some of those votes no war repairing i don't know
uh... riparian that same poll went from sixteen to twenty two but again that was
one perry held sixteen percent of the vote
uh... sixteen percent the boat that he probably doesn't have the bad poll was
taken early october pre all of the debate the buckle freed is by ralph
video that's going around now of uh... of uh... rick perry
uh... dis seemingly didn't getting bazaar speech in new hampshire uh... so
i don't think in my opinion that they will help rick perry other than the fact
that rick perry has a lot of money to spend
and when there's one last candidate for him to spend it running against that's
more money they can spend
running against mitt romney and running against the some of the other candidates
so i do think that the cane if something happens with herman cain it will have a
an obvious ripple effect you don't need me to tell you that but i do think that
the
prime beneficiaries of this or mit romney
and uh... ironically newt gingrich a couple of tidbits before we get on with
ilya sharman this i thought was an interesting story jerry turkey in the
former coach of the another university of nevada las vegas for so many years
ago used to suck on a tell all the time uh... his son last year ran for senate
as a republican in the data in the primary there
uh... his daughter-in-law denny's life is the head of the state g_o_p_ i'd
jerry turkey and and his wife who was a city councilwoman in las vegas have
indoor studies shelley berkeley there who is the democrats
uh... running against dean heller for the senate seat in uh... in
nevada which i think it's just an interesting tidbit any because any time
the basketball coaches involved intern endorsement it's interesting to me but
more so that his son that ran as a republican in the dollar log chairs the
state g_o_p_ are so keep your eyes on the better insists it's a crazy place
are also about wanted but before we get on with the gas
charlie rangel uh... di den rubble charlie rangel the congressman from
north the second time without with venerable but he's one of white for
venerable
uh... is uh... is a charlie rangel maybe primary challenge in new york lied
williams who's a former bill clinton advisor eyes
sort of posturing to run against him a primary challenge to charlie rangel
would've been unheard of but because of the sort of houck have cheated he became
uh... with some of the ethics charges last year he is waller ball he is all
old he's establishment dot and i think it would be interested to see him
challenge it seems like democratic resources would be that's spent going as
republicans in that state but i understand why that is in those are the
ramifications when you have an ethics violation even charlie rangel isn't
above
a primary challenge again it's not official but keep your eyes and clyde
williams is raising money talking the donors and he's out there are so i i
really think that uh... that will be you know not necessarily a race to watch it
will be a democratic seat
uh... but it'll be interesting to see the where money is spent in the state of
new york and it'll be interesting also to see or governor cuomo comes down in
that race was governor cuomo if he's going to make an endorsement he's making
every endorsement now with his eyes and two thousand sixteen in my opinion
uh... so will be interesting to see how that goes as well again reach me at that
michael schwartz
this is twenty twelve we're here all year and we're gonna be talking to you
about everything to do with politics i appreciate all the tests were getting
we're trying to get some of the gas all of the yes actually
the rescuers for uh... and we will do that we have a whole year to do it and
uh... and the promises that we will
will be back with ilya shame and later in the show henry waxman you're watching
twenty twelve
today now we go to the tenth district of illinois we're joined today about
congressional candidate ili eshe aiman elliot thanks for me on the show us that
paper experiments so if you're running against a guy named bob dole
uh... which is funny anyway could you could just keep saying bob dole
the all the time uh... but bob dole became congressman one
mark kirk
uh... who is now a sitting senator of public and senator from illinois decide
to run uh... for office and and he's a one-term uh... congressman justice at
the table a little bit ileum agee this is the the biggest democratic district
in the country that is held by a g_o_p_ members so i would say that the climate
is right to take this seed away from the republicans is that right
that totally right this is a district at the typewriter about what what what
sixty three percent of the vote
packet pickup right
at his home state
but more importantly aka district for the republican incumbent to rather
creating jobs
but poet party line every step of the way from everything from the right
budget any medicare
particularly one pictures
so i think we have a king maker prepared for a book fair sick and tired of lack
of action and dropped the washington
and we have to come but this is permanently out of touch
sits and talk about that how does a guy like this imminent or sought in this
district marquardt was a republican continues to be today a bob dole
is a republican uh... you are a progressive democrat you're going to be
in a primary with a democrat that is supported by the uh... good deal of the
party base therein in illinois uh... what what
what happens in that district that makes it go republican
well you know i think traditionally and again because before we got to me about
prepared even more democratic yeah picked up in a district that part of the
properly without it
the rotor terror
credibly pop art part
and don't like party-line voters they want somebody who will blueprint that
i'm not understand what they're facing every day
and go out that particular logically
but i think the key
progress of my campaign with that might drop will be picked up every single day
an advocate for middle-class families in the district
regardless of which party is in power and which party present right now
ultimately things like putting back people back to work or rebuilding
infrastructure for store credit card tax code
shouldn't be part of the nation's they should be a problem temperatures the
poked all across the district and frankly
all accross the country are looking for from washington
you know if a tight-knit i hear you say all those things and and appreciate them
uh... it's it's something that uh... the democrats and i think anyone rather
running against any kind of incumbency anywhere actually
it's going to be running toward is going to be running toward the idea of job the
middle class families especially in this election especially as we see the occupy
movement especially as we see in the political discourse now
uh... any an investigation into why there's such a difference why jobs are
running away a resident being created et cetera
uh... but at the same time that you get to washington and you will be part of
uh... what is presumably a minority but maybe not but even within that party
let's say let's say the democrats women say they lose it's a it's it's of no
moment into my question really
you will be a part of a progressive obeys inside the democratic party that
has been stymied what do you think will canoeing ashamed to do to change the
fact that that that progressive voice isn't being heard in washington
well i think you're exactly right but the court dealt with it
but require background and preferences
the fact of the past year and a half at the restaurant location director robot
dot org
hyper real health care reform for the american people away civilian does that
make you turn in the organization
what that does that make you a community organizer
but right got my start writer particularly are darker at a critical
full i've never heard of it anyone go anywhere from community organizing in
illinois i'm just
now lol warn you may want to try and do something different
but you know there are correct that i think we're good people are better my
experience academic in
working with active registration
working to stop republicans from spending in the way
but also work in the whole democrats accountable democrat
real health care for we have to hold their feet to the fire
so i come to the thought of a professional politician but a problem
with the background
in organizing an advocate for the community
working both inside and out for the congress but i think that the unique
perspective
they'll be up for making sure that'll really picked up out for democrats which
i do think we can do
but that we can come to productive back pocket even stronger in boulder were
hurt but without
btw
the uh... the idea then that european in a way of first of all your primary issue
are running against a democrat but you're also running against a little bit
of a democratic establishment user the people that have a line behind you that
are already sitting members of congress
our people on the progress of caucus uh... you've howard dean behind you what
what is it likely running against a democrat for you right now in this is
your first congressional election
uh... it is uh... not an open seat but it certainly gained a blue you you
alluded to the fact that there was redistricting there and and what was
redistricted into your district attempted eleanor is when that guy which
is a population base and also a democratic
uh... you know stronghold in the state of illinois what
how do you balance running against a democrat uh... and being a democrat how
do you balance what what what is the tactic there it's got to be it's gotta
be a slippery slope
you know i think realistically were running for same campaign in the primary
at oracle
we're running a campaign based ana set of corrective eliot but i think they're
worth fighting for watch
idea that we have a federal dropped though to put people back to work
idea that we construct impact our tax code
thoroughly backdoor actor muppet american
an idea the return of aftermarket
and what we've team effect out like a lot of pray for the country whether or
not the way than people for don't go there to vote weeping a tremendous for
looked like that
there over six thousand donors prior campaign people tippen and paying twenty
bucks
when the highest don't have a clue that may not come in for the country we've
got three hundred fifty volunteers
knocking on doors making phone calls but the reality is that i think people are
dole ready for a chain in washington
and so hungry for somebody who will co-operate advocate for them
that we are running a campaign
devote our valued greatly impacted at the primary and in general
and fundamentally at the positive campaign about what the district that
looking for so it seems it will be really no different running against dole
did you get out of the primary i'm running against democrat in the sand
station out of state that i want
as few uh... a question what about you know you mention the federal jobs bill
are you happy with the jobs bill that the president uh... has drawn up and put
before congress now
i would happy let you ship to the polka
finally
but if you go back to work
you know we've had nine months of chiropractic care single dot introduced
a path to the hospital
at different time factor of the country for revenge the kentucky when she
introduced but far boulder and bigger drop though
accurate or not
adult both at work
instantaneously higher procuring folk between every project
to rebuild uh... school
and to offer to project or proper country
but i think the president proposals are *** up
the reality of given the unemployment rate
between eight and nineteen percent all across my district
i think we need to do much more and i think the american people expect that to
do much more
but right and the reality the for the reality is that that that bill is before
congress is is being met with a great deal of resistance it's a congress that
you intend to inhabit and at the same time
uh... even the big bold ideas even when the president does something that that
you endorse the progressives indoors finally uh... that that is proactive on
jobs it is still being met with resistance of the congress do you want
to be a part of so uh... that they think of a you know i think the calendar
interconnected gary hart
to get everything done for electric bill
but i think my job
at going out there
committing to introduce
or co-sponsor and robert though i think they want to conquer
to advocate and campaign on that throughout both the primary federal
further will actually have a mandate dr
picked up the car here
but the fact that the first of all american people i think we have to run
the commute ideas
but folk art department introduced a path bug
come january twenty fifth picked listen to me is you know idealistic and you're
running for office and then you're in the wrong line of work to pat and i
don't need some sort of
throw cold water on the i'd just sort of mean that the the landscape the weight
is right now it is the that'd it seems that very difficult time
antenna and frustrating was so obviously uh... for something like a jobs bill
because of the division in congress so i i i'm i've just always wonder about
people who come in uh... with such stark differences to what is already there
would be you know when if they're going to have the sort of stick to would have
nested to do what one selected but i i mean you acquit yourself really well on
that and i i know you're saying it's just as the stark reality of the way
congress works is sometimes daunting we're going to be right yeah but every
day we got a lot gorakhpur guntur hero
all proper district
agar cubic
number one
we need help for the economy when you dropped off the put people back to work
and number two
washington even getting anything done
that make a difference my life
but i think in that format
so much anger
so much frustration
about the economic reality people pay
it's a unique opportunity
talked about a collection of folk to may not agree on all the social issues
broadleaf economic issues israel at their computer recollection
and i think in the collection of that
are very proud of her part of the country
we can show model for democrat prop up the country
there one week stand-up
boldly with conviction for working families upper middle class family
dot dot correct before directory but i think that could have happened far
beyond the front commercial district the fall
well use enough full of fire and and uh... and idealistic and i think it's
great and um... you know where we're happy with the sf part of every guest
coming on twenty twelve is that they'd taken impossibly difficult quiz
about their dislike a district or their state i'm derek in that district in the
tenth district of illinois there are four colleges name two of them for me
that we've got the counselor carry
but loretta capra street coburg at quarter to mark the end of the news you
know we have a
what but that was an easy one for is ready for the look out the window and i
said i never got lake or cod ok rabbit uh... um... for bonus i'll give you two
more this these two are really tough
there's oakton community college and trinity international but that's
prepared more where a paratrooper rosalindfranklin wonderful lyrical
choreographer and now you're showing off ilya
attributes
uh... tell me you know what district in illinois you would find the chicago
botanical garden
at regular breakfast if you're doing bummbly will you do for two
and tell me about their reporter record is there a military base in your
district
quicker great-great-grandmother
but for the district
when the higher concentrations of retired military folks
the critical issue here and i think the bigger question for my district as
i would provide support probably threats returning
from hong kong retort afghanistan and iraq attitude
well uh... that's uh... you three for three and now i wanted to tell me
name one week yuliya in the n_h_l_ this is not going to count against you get a
wrong because
europe it has nothing to do with your congressional district
unfortunately you're talking about welfare develop
i got a pretty good but i thought iliacom holds up would be needed answer
with any of you know i don't know uh... an extra point on this list mission and
thank you for being on twenty twelve uh... we appreciate we hope to see down
the line a little bit
war and uh... and best of luck out there it's going to be a a good long here for
you
thank so much for having me
welcome back to twenty twelve we have the great pleasure of welcoming to our
ah... into our show uh... congressman henry waxman an old friend of the
youngsters congressman thanks for joining us that i'm happy to be with you
so out you know where were an election show i want to talk to a little bit
about the work of congress and then quickly about your election ibn the the
it must be frustrating to be any weapon washington right now up against uh... a
republican majority that is unbending on wavering especially when there's
somebody who's prided himself over a career for so long as as a champion of
oversight is a champion of looking out for what is wrong uh... helped explain
to me just tell us if you can what it's like going to work every morning uh...
will itself
it's it's uh... difficult when i realized that the republicans are in
charge of the house
and they want to do things for that i i'm very much against a water eliminate
the environmental laws
pick the health care uh... legislation that's been
so revered in this country medicare and medicaid
and uh... turned them into
uh... programs that will not live up to with the expectations of the american
people
and uh...
uh... the my may satisfaction is knowing that so much of what they're trying to
do that in accordance six feet in doing because
the senate won't take it up are all except their their legislation and if it
got to the president he would veto it
but uh...
i have to make the case tutored things
that should have been accepted and resolve that we should move on to other
matters
uh... and and make the case and take the losses in the house knowing that uh...
uh... the statue right will
will pay off but we're not talking about the important things that we still need
to do in this country uh... given that the joblessness
uh... out of the high unemployment rate and the inequity in our nation between
the haves and have-nots which is growing dramatically
eat you know congressman when you were in the majority very recently uh...
those problems existed as well and i think there's an american electorate as
you can see with the uh... you know not the specific henry waxman numbers with
the specific numbers about commerce away congress polls
that there's an american electorate that is just dissatisfied with what congress
is dumb whoever's been in charge in the view
seen a lot of evolutions you've been a lot of congress' what is it about this
congress in the previous congress to me that even you know
more a distasteful to the americans do you feel someone sits there and i was
asked by a reporter
uh... what my reaction to the idea that the congress is relying purse
sent approval rating
and my response was if somebody had actually i wouldn't approve of the
congress either yeah other congresses wasting time and wasting money
uh... with flightcentre absolutely unnecessary and fair childish
uh... there's a a resistance to
thinking about
the issues and looking at the plaques for example
what we are threatened uh... by a climate change and they a cockpit
accumulation of carbon emissions we've known this is an overwhelming strike
typically contentious about it we need to get on with
changing our energy not just because of the environmental damage but because of
our over dependent on foreign oil which is the national security matter
and if we get something to move
our energy policies we can create millions of jobs and become the leaders
around the world in the new innovative technologies for the future
what are we doing quarter republicans wanted to
uh... stop the environmental protection agency from doing anything
about uh... a climate change in global warming there certainly over death
legislation
and that they got through the house that i offered with congressman markey
and uh...
and eight denied this science every republican voted
in our committee
to deny this scientific consciences
that there is a ticket duration of carbon emissions or that uh... great
part of it has been made in this doing harm to
uh... the uh... they human health and the environment
and they just voted it down is that this was just another
uh... point of view
yeah rather than a scientific character came to their side the diaries
they that operate without an understanding or willingness to look at
what what we need to do now for that the problems will get worse a more expensive
to do with later
uh... it status extremely at frustrating
and yet everyday we cvs republicans kick that no nothing
entice science
uh... denial approach yeah too
uh... a whole range of environmental issues well you know you know
congressman uh... maybe uh... but there's a latino it boggles my mind
actually when you when you put it that way
for the nine percent that are voting in favor of congress aquatic but it was
certainly one of the very upset
returned to
uh... blood relatives in our staff booth and say yes
i believe it i believe it's buying a line maybe some of these republicans
were getting snowed on october right now are in a start coming around the climate
the in that that might be refreshing as well purposes in different
big shake-up in november twenty twelve net will bear that i put my hope is that
people understand that the people that could control the operation
certainly in the house but even in the senate where there's a nominal
democratic
majority yeah because they can't do anything
paper where they have to be sixty votes up even take up a bill and debated
so tell me tell me what what you would imagine the conversation you really know
uh... but tell me tell me what happens when when howard berman uh... who is now
in a very strange election
uh... with brad sherman dil goto to other gonna spend a ton of money running
out of the ordinary
future waste of money that could go
to help democrats get elected all around the country and instead they credit
spend it throwing mud at each other
he had during a campaign and in california because of the change in the
law
it's not just for the primary
where your select ordinarily silica democratic nominee but now the law in
california so at the top to either june elections will run off in november even
if they're the same parties which likely that the two were flooded out into
separate elections echoing all the way to the november ballot and the money
that's going to be spent on that is of course historical i mean i i didn't have
anything to millions of dollars in it just
inexcusable can't henry waxman this bill in the room and say listen guys let's
flip a coin she's i mean picked kids we're gonna save
millions of dollars with this one for the coroner brad sherman if you lose a
you we'll get a nice job someplace is same thing for our berman has been
serving with me forever manager
seems like this is a it's a ludicrous thing because i'm sure if you look at
their voting records there virtually identical over the past and so there
there isn't there a good genuine differences between them
everyone notes but there's a real difference between them
in their obit there
uh... import as a member of congress because howard berman
example is history
top democrat on the international relations committee whose chairman when
we're the majority they'll be chairman again when we get the majority and he
has the
skill and temperament
to work on a bipartisan way on foreign policy matters
that uh... re-emphasize diplomacy and ten move this to the right path
regimen may agree with our program but it doesn't have the positioning or the
ability to howard berman has yeah uh... cell and uh...
uh... higher pressure was a little more my district geographically or for them
to justice well
yes but they'll be apply to people will doctor say well i love the betterment or
however mister i gotta go for them yet they're going to be
took passages between them and i just think it's uh...
on unnecessary especially because of another option proprietor of a
relationship etc yeah firewall at compromise i i buzz suspect you're gonna
have a very tough re-election as you always do uh... it's that i had a lot of
malaria looking forward to meeting the people live there
southgate are part of a lawyer but i also have the poor
of my existing district i don't know of any uh... democrat democratic opposition
i think uh... if it's going to talk to the republicans
to be anybody looked at it in my district shortcut feeling pretty
confident all you know uh... we we were doing this with every candidate who
comes into the twenty twelve before we let you go we give the an impossible
quiz
uh... to our uh... to our guest uh... ncar some western what is the most
famous zip code in beverly hills which you find in your district
beverly hills
nine oh two one oh you got it uh... give me congressman toontown senior district
and we may have given one away with the suffix
ols in them
occur in older beverly hills the u dot s and who it is the team trip patron
saint
of santa monica
avoid tickets
for that monica you've got to ask ira glass in few three for three idle
well aware of the
the u_n_ re-elections when you have military i'd love to turn over the
border daily but it was much easier to you know many passed the quiz over to
brad sherman and and howard berman see if they can work it out of the laguna
hills with a simple questions that we have no yeah a lot of hill the you know
no all theirs with also and but north hills west hills pro-life
occassion thanks for being on the on thurs we hope to visit with you again
now before the election
men uh... in two thousand twelve bellecourt affects but
that enjoys well our thanks to ilya shannon and congressman henry waxman for
joining us uh... what again where we're going to try and cover every single race
in the country at some point
uh... this is this coming year we thank you for watching were in the back next
week with more guests more political talk will have a
luau look on herman cain and that we're going to have a lot more to talk about
is a presents the best i will see here on twenty twelve
