I'm Bill Elzley with Showplace Lawns. Let's talk about how to remove clover from your
lawn organically. Showplace Loans, we're an organic based landscape service and this is
something that we deal with on a regular basis, but it's not easy. Removing clover from the
lawn is going to take some time. Weeds in general are an indication of poor soil quality.
Clover is an indication of very little or no nitrogen present in the soil. Depending
on the thickness of the clover, the thickness of the turf that it's in, you can by hand
remove some of this making sure to get the roots. However the best way is to go back
to prevent it from coming back and that is to apply nitrogen to your soil. Nitrogen is
applied in three ways. It can be applied obviously with your fertilizer, second with a good top
dressing of compost, and third with corn gluten weed pre-emergent. Now the corn gluten or
any other weed pre-emergents will not work on the clover. Again it's the lack of nitrogen
that causes this to happen. At the same time of needing to apply nitrogen do not, do not
use a high nitrogen based fertilizer. Do not go over nine for your nitrogen number at any
time. In our part of the country we fertilize three times a year, in April, June and October
. Depending on where you are I know that will vary. A second thing that you need to
check is your soil PH. Depending on your PH value it could be locking out nutrients or
preventing other nutrients from even existing and things of that nature. So check the soil
PH. If that soil PH needs to be brought back down, several applications of sulfur will
help you with that. So check your soil PH, make sure that you schedule some good fertilizers,
corn gluten for nitrogen, and a good top dressing. This over time will solve your clover issue
organically.
