More Maori and Pakeha died in the NZ wars, than in the World Wars.
This was expressed in a report being analysed
by NZ and international historians in Wellington today.
A descendant of Parihaka began the Tutu te Puehu conference
which is about the NZ wars.
For us to meet and discuss the war history of this country.
Monty Soutar is concerned that the research of Pakeha historians
is taken from books, unlike Maori.
The majority of the researchers are Pakeha.
There are some Maori researchers present
to share the stories told by their ancestors
regarding the wars of the 19th Century.
28 historians came to present their research about the NZ wars.
I come from the Maori point of view.
The research presented by the Pakeha historians
come from university books.
But Maori have visited these places spoken of in the books
and heard it from the mouths of their own ancestors.
Mahara Okeroa is saddened that the Crown is yet to establish a day
to commemorate those who fell in those wars.
They will not commemorate that war.
Lectures on the NZ wars will continue today and tomorrow.
The conference will end on Sunday.
