Life experience has taught me how important women are
in helping create a productive society where it can also be a peaceful society.
And so I've long believed if we could get more women involved in their own
communities, in their own societies, in their own governments, and even in their
own economies, we would help create a more prosperous, stable, and secure world.
A lot of people think of soldiers when we think of global security, or maybe
men sitting around the big briefing table,
but I believe global security starts at the local level.
If the local communities are secure and stable, than the country is going to be
secure and stable, and if the countries are secure and stable
the globe, the world is going to be secure and stable. So that's the idea:
it's global security with a broad view.
This conference is a
great gathering of people
from Uganda, Afghanistan, Liberia who have lives through conflicts and lived
through efforts to to bring people together and end the conflict and
reconcile the conflict sometimes successfully. Some are still striving to do
that.
But we're bring together people with on-the-ground, living through it experience
with people from the governments of Nordic Baltic countries and the United
States. and so I think this conference will be a great success but only one step
along the way
to helping get more women involved in ways that bring a sustainable peace
and security to our world.
