If you could give one piece of advice based
on servant leadership to the leaders of the Coast Guard,
what would that be?
Listen. Truthfully,
I watch, I watch an awful lot of people
and it amazes me
sometimes how individuals
will be thinking about what their going to say instead of
thinking about what's being said to them.
There are
certain senior leaders I've in the
past that are not part of my senior
leadership team because I observed that in them.
I think that's a very quick indication a balance between self
and service, is how much do you value
the people that are talking to you. And if you're constantly talking over them,
or responding before you have a chance to really listen and digest
what folks are saying, I think that's a signal that you don't value them very much.
So, I would say get out there and listen.
Listen to the folks you're working with. Listen to the people that are senior to you
as well. So often I see questions or other
things directed to either from members of Congress or from the Administration, where ever else.
We start talking about the things we want to say, rather than
responding to the concerns, responding to the questions.
So I think God gave us two of these
and only one of these, and we ought to you use them in that
proportion as well.
