Hello, Maricopa. I’m here with these students from the IGNITE Tobacco Prevention Program to talk to you about the health of all of the Maricopa community.
. I believe that the Maricopa family -- students, faculty and staff – deserve the best future possible, and for me, that means the healthiest future.
That’s why I recently made a decision to have the Maricopa Community Colleges join more than 500 colleges and universities around the country that have prohibited smoking and tobacco products from their campuses.
That means that, effective July first, 2012, Maricopa Community Colleges will be smoke-free and tobacco free. As of that date, there will be no smoking or use of any other tobacco on any District property.
We’re announcing this change early because we recognize that it will require a change in behavior in a significant number of our students, faculty members and employees.
This is a bold move for us but it’s the right move. Here’s PJ Flores from our Ignite Tobacco Prevention program with more.
Thanks, Dr. Glasper. As a student and strong proponent of healthy living, I am thrilled that Maricopa Community Colleges,
the largest Community College in the country, is going smoke-free tobacco free. I’m proud that our colleges are joining the growing numbers that have made this important decision.
We are an education institution, and I believe it’s time we did the right thing for the health and well-being of the Maricopa community.
We have many students – particularly those in health care – who will move from our campuses to smoke-free workplaces.
We owe it to them to provide campus settings where there is no tobacco use. And think about our employees.
We owe it to them to provide the healthiest environment possible in which they can work.
On November 17 – the date of the 2011 Great American Smokeout – we’ll launch an initiative that includes educational programs,
tobacco cessation programs and other features that will make it easier to kick the habit.
If you’ll be affected by these changes, now’s the time to think how you can get on board.
If you’re not affected directly, consider helping out with this campaign, which will be a part of our campuses and
and other facilities through July 1. Join me in providing a healthier Maricopa for all members of our community in 2012. Thanks.
