My name’s Manjula Lal, the course I did at university was International Business Management and I graduated in 2010.
It was actually a Graduate Advantage – it was an internship. I was actually working for two companies, one was an estate
agents and the other one was called “What it takes 2” and basically that business helps people who want to open up their
own business and people who have their own business it aids them for that.
I was in regular contact with the Careers Department at the university and they were sending me jobs and this one appealed
to me the most so one of the members set me up with an interview there. You study marketing but it’s not the same when you
go into industry. Alongside that presentation skills, had to be confident talking to people.
I think its about talking about your work and bringing out what you know to everybody else so it looks like you know what
you’re talking about because if you don’t know what you’re talking about when you have to present your work people lose
confidence in you. If some interns are willing to keep you on longer they want to see that you’ve got that confidence and
you actually learn something from them.
It was exciting to learn, I have learnt a lot and when I go onto my next employment if they tell me they want to sort out
Facebook and so on I can confidently do that and it’s another skill that I’ve bought with me.
I would say go for it I think there are so many advantages for going for an intern, you pick up new skills, you get to
meet new people and sometimes them people can show you other opportunities as well, just because you don’t gain an
opportunity there you can gain contacts from other people as well so I would say go for it, it’s fantastic experience.
