today is a big day in the world of exploration because today in seventeen
eighty eight
the first boat from the english first fleet
arrived in australia
and a penal colony was born
traveling on the first fleet
were seven hundred and fifty three convicts
and twenty nine sheep
the convicts were guilty of everything from
pick pocketing to
*** but
i'm not sure what the sheep had done
and this very day in seventeen seventy eight
captain james cook
who discovered australia
even though i do believe the aborigines already knew it was there
became the first european
to discover the hawaiian islands
when he sailed past the island of o-ahu
he named these these the sandwich islands
though
the people already living there
preferred the name they already had
and captain cook was later killed
by an angry mob of hawaiians
or
sanwichians (?!)
and today
in nineteen twelve
antarctic explorer robert scott
discovered he wasn't in fact the first to reach the south pole
when he found the abandoned tent
of competitor Ronald Admunsen who had reached the pole five weeks earlier
I can't imagine
how disappointed scott must have felt
to have discovered he wasn't the first but
when you think about it
never really the first you remember
sandwichians can be deadly
a turkey club nearly choked me
although
I did have handcuffs on at the time
but that's another story... say "cut" you BLEEEP.
