costco has been the center of a lot of controversy over the last few days
because they
had a bunch of bibles displayed in a Southern California Costco that were
labeled it's fiction they had the fiction sticker on their
and the LA Times reports that discovery church pastor
Caleb Cal pinback recently came across these bibles which had the fiction
sticker
and he posted it to social media with the comment
costco has bibles for sale under the genre of fiction
meaning this triggered a huge social media really response
and eventually lead to Costco apologizing saying in a statement that
the distributor had mislabeled just a few of these Bibles as
fiction and that another Costco store had them labeled as
gift books %uh the pastor said
he doubts the washington-based company Costco
would have labeled aka Ron as fiction
yeah most Costco's don't even sell karan's but I think the irony
love the fact that the koran isn't even sold in Costco
might be lost on some people the company said its correcting the mistake for
future distribution
there's actually a really good discussion to have over this right was I
mean
fiction is where either this story or the characters or both
are made up imaginary fictitious
non-fiction would be writing that is about backed
or real events it includes all rating and that is not
fiction this is actually a very interesting question because
if the people in the Bible are real or if some of the people in the Bible
are real that would suggest that it is nonfiction but
if those people are real and the events that take place
are not or we have no evidence that they took place whether it is the burning
bush
are the parting of the Red Sea or whatever else it is
then it is fiction in the sense that fiction often portrays
real people in fictitious situations there's a whole genre called
historical fiction that may talk about real people and in kind of made up
scenarios and then the other question lewis's should intend matter
if you set out to write a fictional book and by chance
you tell a true story right remember that at the beginning at many fiction
book that says this is intended to be a work of fiction
any coincidences that relate to real people places or events
is completely coincidental is it's still not fiction and on the other side
if you set out to write a historical account and it just happens that you get
it completely wrong
does it make it fiction or is it simply inaccurate
non-fiction I think that there's there's actually a really good conversation to
have here
right I i think most people would agree that
of course there are characters and events in the Bible that worry on that
actually happened
but I I would say that's due to the
number by a bad state are clearly impossible and or did not happen
I it has to be labeled fiction a its
is a fictional novel some have emailed me saying
it is religion it is not fiction or non-fiction it is a book
about it is the religious it should be in the religion section
now there's that I find it to be a complete cop-out number one
the religion section is usually part of nonfiction but
for me when I talk about what is a what is the right word but should be under
religion
it is books about religion about
this study over a ledge in not sacred texts I think that it's actually a
complete cop-out
say no now forget about fiction non-fiction it's just religion
if you wanna put it in its own category that's fine
with that category has to be under the broader category
up fiction I believe wow so Lewis digging that there are drawing a line in
the sand
send me your thoughts on this what do you think and also
the other question is what if the Bible is simply
a historian that is biased and doesn't really have
support for everything that was written let's consider that does that mean
nonfiction it does that mean fiction
