Hey, what's up guys? I got a lot of questions on the website this week about pitch recognition.
Ok, and how to pick up the pitches early. Things like that. So, I'm not going to answer
a specific question here. Instead, I'll just kind of go over pitch recognition and how
to, how to focus in on pitches. Ok? You'll hear a lot of coaches that say look in at
the release point. Ok? So, kind of stare in, if it's a right handed pitcher, where ever
he would be releasing the ball. So if he's this kind of uh pitcher, or if he's a side
arm guy, or where ever he may be. Let's say it's right here. You kind of want to look
in over here as he's going through his wind up. So, even though he's coming here and everything,
you're still focusing over here. Ok? Now, the problem with that is, when you kind of
stare at spot for a long time, try it right now, when you stare at a spot, pick a spot
and stare at it for like 7 or 8 seconds. Your eyes can get watery, they lose a little bit
of focus. Ok? It's hard to do. So if you're staring in at a certain spot, you know, your
eyes can kind of get lazy. Instead, what I suggest you do is go from a soft focus to
a hard focus. A soft focus is more like you're just kind of looking at the pitcher. You have
a general focus of him. You're seeing everything that he's doing but you're not really zoned
in on any particular thing. Ok? But now, as he comes through and gets to his release point,
then you come into a hard focus, pick up that ball, and see it all the way in. Ok? The reason
why I like this, moving from a soft focus to a hard focus is for a couple reasons. One,
like I said before is, your eyes don't get too strained for too long a time. Ok? The
other reason is, when you have a soft focus and you're seeing him go through his mechanics
or his delivery, you can pick up little things. Like the way his hands separate, or the tempo
on which he's coming. So, you may be able to subconsciously or intuitively pick up a
pitch that you're seeing. Just by having a soft focus and looking at everything he's
doing. Ok? So, those are two reasons why I like moving from a soft focus while he's in
his delivery into a hard focus here as it comes out. Ok? Because then you can pick up,
you know, a lot of coaches, like I said a lot of coaches will say look for the wrist
at release point and everything. But if you're starring up here for too long it's going to
be hard to see. So, move from that soft focus. Sometimes you can pick up that change up or
that curveball earlier, you know, here, if you're in that soft focus, or at least know
that something different is coming. Ok? So, try it out the next time you're out there.
Kind of have a general gaze at the pitcher and then move into a more hard focus look.
I hope that answers your questions. All you guys that sent questions about pitch recognition.
