So to anyone who gets offended by Daniel wearing earrings, or his fake lip-piercings: Get a
life! It's not your decision what others staple to their faces. But then again, there are
those who obviously want others to get offended by covering their whole face in tattoos, or
- my personal favorite - ear tunnels.
It's so ugly! Every time I see one of those *** I wanna stick a huge ***
padlock through their ears! I predict that in 20 years, we have a bunch of guys with
their earlobes hanging down to their chin, because they don't want to wear that tunnel
anymore. And what exactly is it they want to express with that ***? Are they signalizing
what's inside their brain?
I know, thinking like that doesn't exactly make me a good person, but how often do you
meet a guy with ear tunnels and think "Oh my god, what a ***!", and then you eventually
get to talk to them, and they are really self-absorbed ***.
Well, you just experienced a phenomenon called "Selective perception". You see in others
exactly what you want to see, or what you expect to see. The stretched earlobes primed
you to notice the character traits you associate with such body art more easily, and to overlook
character traits that are contradictory to this.
Moreover, our own self-perception is in constant interaction with how others percieve us. If
others wrongly expect us to have certain character traits, we are likely to develop and exhibit
them later. We all constantly judge others, and we are judged by others, that's just human
nature. The ability to assess the personality of others based on a crude first impression
is an evoultionary neccessity.
You should be aware of this when considering any form of body modification. A body piercing
is never just a piercing. It alters the way other people view you, and thus ultimately
alters your own personality. In summary: Don't get ear tunnels, or you'll become a ***!
