I think that bullying becoming—it’s rising because people are insecure about how they
are, who they are so they have to put the embarrassing spotlight on someone else.
I think bullying is on the rise because people aren’t taking a stand on what’s happening
and they just think, you know let them do it and see that, it’s all right.
People just want to feel like they can power over somebody and I guess that looks cool
to them if they can like boss somebody around and make somebody else look bad so they can
look good. You want to be in the cool group and everybody
just thinks that you have to bully somebody to be in the cool group where if they’re
doing it, it’s ok to follow them. People base bullying upon a stereotype like
they say you don’t look this way, because you’re supposed to look this way.
It’s always going to be the person that looks different that gets picked on, like
people that fit in, they’ll have a group so like it’s not like they’re going to
get picked on, they single out the people that don’t have anybody, to pick on.
A lot of ways that kids don’t fit in is because of the way they dress like if somebody
has like a hole in their pants and they don’t have good clothes and nice shoes and their
hair combed, they get teased really badly. Most people that I see get targeted is people
from different ethnic groups. Their sexuality, skin color, if they’re fat or skinny.
Girls are mean. We go after what you know will hurt the most and guys…they just kind
of surface area. You’re small, you don’t have muscles, you don’t play a sport, you
don’t fit in. Time and time, I see the teachers just look
at it and walk away. Don’t even say a word or anything and in some cases the teachers
even egg it on and laugh with them and it makes the kid feel a lot worse. An adult who’s
supposed to protect them is making it worse for them.
It’s horrible…like sometimes I don’t even think it’s the kid’s fault, but in
school it’s supposed to be a place of refuge for the kids but instead it’s like it’s
a place of torture.
