Shop till you drop: Too much shopping causes foot pain.
Anniversary sales at department stores in Taiwan are booming at the moment.
And people are going nuts! A 30-year-old lady in Taichung
frequently shops for more than 4 hours at a time.
Last week, her right foot to her waist became painful, so she went to the doctor.
She limped all the way. It was painful to walk. Every time she walked, it hurt.
If she rested, she was ok.
Sometimes her calf and thigh were painful, too.
This was due to an inflammation on her sole.
Plantar fascia is a thick but flexible fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot.
Attached to the heel bone and the big toe, this tissue helps the foot to bend and stretch.
Unnatural or over use of this area causes inflammation, aka plantar fascia.
This is a common ailment around anniversary sales periods.
Last week alone, four patients visited Mr. Lin, a neurologist at Taichung Hospital.
Cures include avoiding bad posture and standing or walking for a long time.
If the condition worsens, medication is considered, such as anti-inflammatory medicine.
In addition, foot massage, exercise, heat or electrotherapy can also relieve pain.
Doctors advise resting for 5 minutes after walking for 30 minutes or standing for 50 minutes.
Or do some stretching by pulling your toes back while sitting to stretch out your calves.
