Entry level positions in interior design generally require a certificate or associate's degree
from a 2-3 year interior design program -- in most cases, a bachelor's or master's degree
is necessary. According to statistics, 3/4 of all interior
designers possess a bachelor's degree many of the remainder have an associate's degree.
It's possible to get a degree in interior design from an online program or a traditional
campus based program. The typical interior design program will include
courses in the history of interior design, space planning, design of residential interiors,
and CAD for interior design. You'll also take courses in leadership in
design and possibly specific courses like floral design along with lighting design.
There will also be background course requirements in business like merchandising and entrepreneurship
along with math requirements usually consisting of College level Algebra.
Licensing requirements vary from state to state. Many states license interior designers
through the National Council for Interior Design Qualification.
