Your Tiger Cast news on October 1, 2010 begins now. [Intro video] Quatman: I m Taylor Quatman.
Wetter: And I m Daniel Wetter. Today, we start with breaking news of Roseville High School
being placed under program improvement. Taylor has more on the story. Quatman: Yes, Daniel.
RHS will be sending a letter to all parents and students notifying them that the school
is entering year one of program improvement and students will have the option to transfer
to another school in the district. Program improvement (or PI) is a status implemented
by the federal government under the Bush s administration s No Child Left Behind Act.
PI status is determined by a sophomore s class s ability to meet all of the 18 Adequate Yearly
Progress standards on the California High School Exit Exam. This year, RHS has met 17
of the 18 requirements, the requirement being that 55.6 percent of students needed to meet
each standard. RHS Principal Brad Basham defends RHS and does not want to see students transfer
to other schools. [Insert video of Basham quotes]. Students will only be able to transfer
to Oakmont High School because all other schools in the Roseville Joint Union High School District
are beyond capacity. The district is currently in year three of program improvement. Wetter:
We also have student and teacher reactions to this topic. [Insert student quotes video]
Wetter: In other news, rumors of a gun threat on campus caused confusion and panic among
students and staff at Roseville High School last Monday. At approximately 8:00 a.m. that
day, a student reported to their counselor that another student might have a weapon on
campus. The student did not actually see the weapon, but believed there could have been
one. Administrators and school resource officer Greg Lieberman conducted an investigation.
By law, school staff is required to investigate a threat of this type even without evidence.
After a full investigation into the matter, the threat was dismissed and an email was
sent by Principal Basham to RHS staff that there was no credible threat. The confusion
caused a student government lunch activity to be cancelled. A phone call was additionally
made to parents to reassure there students were completely safe. Quatman: We have a budget
update for you today. Furlough days have been rescinded by the district. Roseville High
School students will no longer receive a day off on April 25 and teachers will drop both
furlough days. These changes come as a result of the Roseville Joint Union High School District
having a higher end of year fund balance than previously expected, coming in at $4.6 million.
RHS teachers have mixed opinions about the reinstated furlough days. [Insert teacher
quotes] October 14 will remain a staff development day, while April 25 will be an instructional
day. Wetter: The district is additionally waiting for a federal jobs bill to pass through
the state of California to hit the district budget that will provide $1.86 million; and
is also expecting $380,000 from the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund, along with $280,000
for an increase in student population. Principal Basham would like to use these additional
funds to change the student to teacher ratio from 27.5 to 1, back to 27 to 1, equating
to roughly 2 less students per class. Quatman: And, we have a tigercast crime watch for you
today. For the past three weeks, the vending machine near the small gym has been closed
due to a student who allegedly head-butted, therefore shattering, the first layer of glass.
This incident occurred on Friday, September 10, just after 3:00 pm. The repairs are anticipated
to cost the school hundreds of dollars. Additionally, the vending machine in Senior Square has been
closed since late last week. According to administration, it was also broken by a Roseville
High School student. Officer Lieberman says it was just a student being quote on quote,
stupid. We have student reactions on this issue. [Insert video of student quotes] Wetter:
It looks like students are definitely not happy about that. And in facilities news,
a chemical imbalance caused a temporary pool closure two weeks ago. Throughout the day,
students reported and complained to Roseville High School Nurse, Dayle Edgerton, that the
water was damaging their eyes. [Insert nurse video] This was possibly due to a pH imbalance.
The pool reopened the following day. Wetter: And your tigercast stripes of health, good
news for people in need this year. The Sacramento Dental Society is offering free dental screening
and care to any school in the Sacramento area. On October 11, Roseville High School s nurse,
Dayle Edgerton, will be holding dental screenings to see if students need dental treatment.
The condition of the students teeth will be measured on a 1-3 scale and if there is a
student with a two or a three, she will refer them to a local office that will provide free
treatment to them on the last Saturday of January. Quatman: The administration addressed
sexting during this year s class meetings, a first for Roseville High School, but now
becoming a common national topic. Campus officer Greg Lieberman gave a short presentation of
the legal consequences involved with sexting and RHS s policy in regards to punishment.
According to assistant principal Jon Coleman, the topic was a necessary addition to the
class meetings. [Insert Coleman quote] Sexting is texting sexually explicit images to others.
And we have sexting statistics for you. A survey conducted in 2008 by teen magazine
Cosmo Girl and the National Campaign confirmed the presence of sexting among young adults.
The research revealed that 39 percent of teens aged 13-19 admitted to sending a sexually
explicit message or picture. The study also revealed that boys are more likely to receive
sexts while girls are more likely to send them. Wetter: [Comment] Quatman: [Comment]
We also have students opinions on this global issue. [Insert quotes of students] Wetter:
And this week s tigercast stripes of character student profile focuses on Roseville High
School varsity football s senior Jeff Minasian. [Insert package] Quatman: Quite an inspiring
student. Wetter: And of course it was homecoming last week and we have coverage of everything
including the rally, the parade, and the
game. Quatman: Yes, we definitely do Daniel. We ll start off our coverage with the rally.
The homecoming rally was held last Friday, and the overall theme was orange and black
in an effort to unite the whole school. The emcees were Nick Blaser and Alexi Johnson
who arrived after a video introduction, showing them getting ready for school and racing to
the gym. [Clip of video] The court was also featured including
princesses Olivia Traina, Kayla Granucci, Melanie Campbell, Paige Teixeira, and Remy
Spandow; and princes Logan Palmer, Jesse Klimek, Tyler Renville, Drew Tawlks, and Simon Estey.
[Quote from a prince/ or princess] Wetter: And, the parade rolled down Campo Street on
Friday, which was transformed into a world of fantasy as Roseville High School hosted
their annual homecoming parade. The parade included homecoming court, dance, cheer, key
club, GSA, band, color guard and Roseville alumni. Former homecoming King Matt Kurz and
Queen Shelby Campbell were part of the parade as well. The parade included the floats made
by different classes that were based on themes chosen by each class. Quatman: The homecoming
game against Pleasant Grove featured a halftime show that included the Roseville dance team,
cheer, the announcement of the float winner, and a performance by the marching band. The
junior class float won the competition. And, the homecoming King and Queen were announced
as well. The 2010 homecoming queen is ASB president Paige Teixeira, and the homecoming
king is Drew Tawlks. Wetter: [Comment on winner] Quatman: [Comment] Wetter: Well, that does
it for us today. Quatman: And, remember that you can watch the next tigercast news two
weeks from now. Wetter: Until next time, I m Daniel Wetter. Quatman: And I m Taylor Quatman.
