For more than one hundred years
Texas A&M University-Commerce
has provided opportunities for students like you
to transform their lives through higher education.
That legacy of excellence stems from the vision of a great leader-
University founder, William Leonidas Mayo.
His creed of
ceaseless industry, fearless investigation
unfettered thought and unselfish service to others
continues to live on in the lives of A&M Commerce students
and alumni each day.
Alumni like Sam Rayburn, the namesake of the student center.
After working odd jobs to pay for school,
he became the longest standing speaker of the US House of Representatives;
leaving a legacy of leadership.
Asantewa Jordan came to A&M-Commerce as a young,
single mother looking for a second chance.
After finding a supportive community of faculty and students,
she pursued a career as the director of social work at
a Dallas healthcare faciliy, leaving behind a legacy of success.
For Hector Gutierrez, going to college was always a goal.
But as the son of a single mom, he knew money would be an issue.
Thanks to a full-ride scholarship from the Honor's College,
Hector can acheive his goal, and will leave a legacy of opportunity.
At A&M-Commerce we embrace a legacy of opportunity that opens the
doors of education to all walks of life.
Sarah Portillo was a stay-at-home mom of two little girls
wanting to go back to work.
As an aspiring math teacher, she needed a school that understood her unique needs.
At A&M-Commerce she found just that,
A legacy of understanding.
Derek Heinze found his success at the UCD campus in downtown Dallas.
Thanks to the help and engouragement of his professors, Derek was able
to secure a full-time job he loves as a junior art director for a local ad agency,
a feat that will allow him to leave a legacy of acheivement.
While our students are the torchbearers of our legacy,
it is our faculty and staff that provided the spark.
Faculty like Jennifer and Kashunda who work closely with their students
to provide them with hands-on counseling experience and opportunities
to engage in relevant research- an effort that has provided their students
with a one hundred percent placement rate after graduation and has left
an indelible legacy of investing in student success.
Our student athletes are encouraged to leave a legacy of excellence on
and off the field. More than just field goals and soccer goals, they focus
on what it takes to succeed in life, they focus on maintaining a 4.0 GPA
while taking Honors college classes and leading their team to the 2008
Sweet 16 like Randi, Courtney and Jordan.
Or Alex Contreras, who learns what it takes to be a leader on the field
as a defensive back and on the sidelines as a future coach.
As important as our academic and athletic acheivemens are, our alumni
and their dedication provide the bedrock of our future.
People like Buddie Barnes who credits his success to his education from
A&M-Commerce. As a business owner, entrepreneur and foundation
board member, he has plenty to offer the university, and consistently does,
choosing to leave a legacy of giving back.
These transformational stories of opportunity are evidence of the legacy
on their families, community and the world.
