Alya Arafat, Secretary of the People’s Will Party
The Syrian crisis is undergoing historic events.
There are political forces of the past.
They are not able to cooperate and settle the new situation.
Therefore, “forces of the past” are acting in Syria;
they are not able to resolve the current crisis, leading the country into a deadlock.
At the same time, we see a tendency of establishing new political forces.
A new political space is being formed in Syria.
We are being asked about what is going on in the north of Syria,
i.e. the struggle between the so-called Islamic Front and other organizations.
Some Western sources say that the Islamic Front is fighting terrorism.
It is not true.
The fighting groups are almost similar in their mentality, contacts, and methods.
They have nothing in common with a political settlement.
It should be emphasized that talks about the struggle against terrorism in Syria are serious talks,
but it cannot be reached without national unity and overcoming of mistrust problems.
It is impossible to defeat terrorism without uniting the Syrians on the ground of a political settlement.
We believe that the Geneva conference should attract
all supporters of the struggle against terrorism and a peace settlement.
However, the terrorist forces are supported by various sides, unfortunately.
On the other hand, the struggle against terrorism cannot be provided without minimal mutual understanding,
which would enable various Syrian sides to unite their forces against terrorism.
