Hey, guys, its Andrea Travillian with Take A Smart Step.Com where we help you thrive
today while still saving for tomorrow. Now, today we're going to address the fact that
sometimes money isn't fun. In fact, it can be boring and it might put you right to sleep
the second you sit down to work on it. Now, there might be other things slightly more
boring, like watching grass grow, but not too many more. So we're going to take a look
today at how to actually make money fun.
So the first recommendation I have in making money fun is that money not being fun and
money being boring is just another money belief. One that we can turn around into something
more fun. So like any belief, you need to get to the root of why you have that belief.
Why do you think money's not fun? Is it because it's confusing? Because everybody else says
that? Why is it that you believe money isn't fun? And once you understand why, you can
begin to create a new story that helps you change that belief about money.
Now, the second reason that money isn't fun for a lot of people is because they don't
understand the 'why' behind taking time to get to know your money. And what I mean by
that is money management for money management's sake is boring. Now, when money management
is done because you want to take a trip to the Caribbean or you want to retire early,
it becomes a very different task to do. When you understand why you're saving money and
why you want to have an emergency fun and why you're actually balancing your checkbook,
money doesn't have that pain feel with it. Any time you're dreading it, sit down and
think about why you're doing it. What's your real why? If you have no clue what your why
is, take some time to figure it out. Write out your life vision statement so that money
has more meaning. Remember money is just a tool to get you exactly what you want. If
you don't know what you want and why you're putting the time and energy into it, then
of course it's going to be boring.
And finally, the third tip I have for you on making money fun is to make a game out
of money. Now, even if you have your 'why' and you don't believe money is boring, there
are some things that just aren't fun to do. Now, on that list for me as an example for
you is taxes. While it's not the bottom money thing, it's pretty darn close. So one of the
things that I've created is every single year, I get to go buy my tax expanding files. Now,
this is how I store my tax information, but here's how I make it fun. Every year, I allow
myself to buy the absolute, prettiest, coolest on that I love. I get super excited about
this. Now, I realize these don't look super exciting. This year, the choices were pretty
slim, but looking forward to allowing myself to pick out the prettiest and neatest one,
the one that I love, gets me excited and happy. And then when I'm working on my taxes and
I'm looking at how absolutely cool my binder is, then it keeps me happy during that entire
process. Total random side note here for you: I cannot believe how much these change every
year. Every year, there's a new design and a new collection. Every store is different.
Even within the same brand name of the store has different options. So me, it really is
fun because I get to go see what's new, what's not. So what my challenge is for you is to
make a game out of the parts that you don't enjoy. So my game is getting to pick out the
prettiest expandable file. Maybe your game is you get to... for every 5 minutes you spend
researching an investment, you get a candy bar. Whatever it is. Make up a game that makes
the money management process fun.
