I recently got an email from a student at Central Piedmont Community College and they
had asked about note cards and that if they are effective. I have a program at Good Grades
Fast.com and sometimes I shoot an email out to a list of students and get their questions
and answer them be in webinars and other video programs. Well one thing you can do, I’m
Professor Scott Straub if I didn’t introduce myself and I help students succeed in school.
Note cards tend to be for a lot of students are the only way that students know how to
study and I have well over a hundred tips that I’ve shared at good grades fast. But
if you tend to use note cards, if this is a big note card wrote them one side, you know
definition, concept whatever it is on the other might be the you know the over-arching
theme for the lesson. Well note cards are great but one way to enhance them is to draw
a picture that represents the definition. And why this is important? The reason why
it’s important is because when students study, number one, if they’re using note
cards, what happen is that look at the note card then look at the answer on the other
side they move on to the next card, students number one tend to move way too rapidly from
one card to the next. I mean how many times have you studied your note cards only come
back later on and you can’t remember anything. You can’t even really remember looking at
the note cards let alone 80 to 90 percent of the facts it’s happened to everybody.
So number one student moves too rapidly but if you want to make your note cards come alive,
take an extra 15 or 20 seconds to draw a small picture that represents and connects the definition
with the word or concept whatever it may be. This not only forces you to concentrate on
the information longer but now it also, when you draw something, you don’t have to be
a Picasso, stick figures are fine, but it activates a different region of the brain.
And every time you activated different region of the brain the chances of you learning that
material for the long haul putting it in a long term memory are increased. Well if you
go to good grades fast I’ve rolled over a hundred tips that can help anyone survive
and thrive in school. Hope to see you at goodgradesfast.com. Thanks!
