Students can study toward their Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) in
the Department of Psychology at York, the largest Psychology program in Canada.
With more than 80 nationally and internationally recognized professors who teach and conduct
research in virtually every area of psychology, students have countless opportunities to find
a subject tailored to their study and career interests.
In addition to classroom instruction, students benefit from practical, hands on learning
experience through research opportunities in our labs and field placements out in the
community with health and health care providers including hospitals, community health centres
community recreation centres and more.
York Psychology students have two Degree Options: The Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science
Both degree options introduce students to a variety of psychological topics ranging
from social and clinical psychology to animal behaviour and behavioural neuroscience, as
well as abnormal psychology, learning, perception, motivation, cognition, personality, and child
development. Through a broad-based curriculum, you will develop an understanding of a full
range of subjects within Psychology, as well as an introduction to research methodology.
And all students in the Honours BA and BSc degrees have the opportunity to carry out
an independent research project in their final year.
In later years you will be able to specialize in those areas that interest you most. For
example, students studying toward their Bachelor of Science can complement their Psychology
courses with courses in other life sciences such as biology and kinesiology; whereas students
studying toward their Bachelor of Arts can choose from a very wide range of courses outside
of Psychology including those in the humanities, social sciences, fine arts, and business.
Understanding human behaviour, how people think and feel,
is a fundamental skill set in many careers and professions in both the private and public sectors
Psychology graduates can work in counselling and mediation,
social work, law, human resources and management, and rehabilitation services.
