It's important that you seek pre-natal care as soon as you know
your pregnant. Used to be that they'd make you wait until you've
missed two periods so that they knew for sure you really were
pregnant. And that's fine if that's when you first find out. But
the sooner we know the sooner we can get you on pre-natal
vitamins. Get that folic acid in your system. Check and make
sure that your iron level is normal. So that you can feel the
best and be best able to cope with the newborn once it gets here
because if your already worn out and tired from being pregnant
it's harder to cope. Pre natal vitamins have usually a little
bit extra iron, they have the calcium, they have DHA which is
something that is important in brain and eye development for the
baby, which now some of the over the counter multi vitamins are
getting. There are some patients who will actually use an over
the counter vitamin during pregnancy for whatever reason-they
don't swallow pills, they tollerate the prescription strength
ones. With insurances the co-pay is sometimes $65 to $80 for a
pre-natal vitamin, which is pretty steep. So they can
suppliment. They're finding those over the counter more often.
But the balance of what is in those vitamins is most easily
tollerated by the moms so that is why we prefer to try them on
them if they can. There's many mixes of pre-natal vitamins now.
Some of them plant based DHA, some are fish based, some have
problems with that fish taste and smell. There are some pre
natal vitamins now that have the plant base DHA and I don't know
how much of those are available over the counter.
