Hi my name is Julissa Higgins, representing MLEC's the Harbinger on this 60 second
explanation on the venezuelan crisis.
In 1999, Hugo Chavez was elected president of Venezuela. He stayed in power until 2013.
His presidency was repressive and controversial from the start i.e implementing legislation
to allow the president to run for office indefinitely. He was succeeded by Nicolas Maduro who has
supported the Chavista type of government. Maduro has effectively shut down any network
that reported on the crisis. Including, expelling four CNN journalists.
Dubbed the most corrupt nation in Latin America Venezuelans are upset bc their money isn't
going to the right places. As a result of years of unsuccessful economic policies, Venezuela
has an inflation rate of 56%.
In response to these issues, the people of Venezuela, especially the youth, have been
inspired to protest against the oppressive Chavista-type regime. Violence in the country
is only getting worse because the instability makes laws difficult to
enforce.
The governmet has killed 3 student protesters, including beauty queen Genesis Carmona.
One of the most important leaders of the opposition, Leopoldo Lopez, has been arrested and charged
with conspiracy and arson.
The opposition wants to implement a new government, with a democratic model and they will not
stop protesting until serious changes are made.
