>>NARRATOR: Fun and exercise were the “running” themes of a recent event at K-State. The College
of Veterinary Medicine hosted its 16th annual Dog ‘N’ Jog on Saturday, April 2, bringing
together dogs and their owners to run a race for a “pet” charity.
>>Veterinary students from the class of 2012 organized this year’s race.
>>JANELLE SCOTT: First of all, it’s a fundraising opportunity for the third year class to help
pay for graduation fees and board exams. . . It’s also, some of the proceeds go to KSDS, which
is a service dog organization in Kansas, Washington, Kansas, and they help train guide dogs and
service dogs.
>>NARRATOR: Registration for the race began at eight a.m. and the teaching-hospital parking
lot was quickly filled with runners and dogs of all shapes and sizes. Several participants
arrived in costume.
>>JANELLE SCOTT: We had a really good response. We’re really excited about that.
>>STEPHANIE OURSLER: Excluding the entries that happened today, we had 245 entries as
of yesterday.
>>JANELLE SCOTT: And there was a decent amount that registered today, the day of the race,
so we are excited with our turnout this year.
>>NARRATOR: Runners were given a choice between a 5 and 10 K run that followed a route around
and through the K-State campus.
>>For some owners, this marathon offered a unique chance to run a race with their pets
that they couldn’t pass up.
>>LU LU: Why Not? I mean, I like to run and my dog actually likes to run too, so it would
be a good event to come to. . . . He actually did really good for having just three legs.
He was really excited and when we first started off, he was actually really fast. I kept,
I kept trying to get him to slow down. He tried to trip up a couple of people, he wanted
to stop and pee on every single bush, just like any other dog.
>>NARRATOR: Dog ‘N’ Jog also featured a 1.5 K “family fun run” in which participants
were asked to guess how long it would take them to complete the race. The winners were
those who completed the race in the time closest to their estimate.
>>No matter which race was run, Dog ‘N’ Jog was the perfect opportunity for owners,
dogs and families to spend the day together.
>>JONI ADAMS: This is Lady Antebellum, she’s my running buddy.
>>INTERVIEWER: How’d she do?
>>JONI ADAMS: She did wonderful, she loved the camaraderie with the other animals . . . Everything’s
been wonderful and Lady and I are going to run the 1.5K with my granddaughter Kaylee.
>>NARRATOR: Everyone at the race seemed to have their own favorite part of the event.
>>JULIE THOMAS: This is Riley and . . .
>>VALERIE ESCHBACHER: She’s running with Riley and I’m running with Josie.
>>JULIE THOMAS: That’s Josie . . . It’s awesome, it’s great weather and really pretty
out. I love K-State’s campus, my husband went to school here and so years ago, I used
to come up here and visit him and we would walk through campus, so, it’s a fun event.
>>STEPHANIE OURSLER: My favorite was just seeing all of the people having a good time
and enjoying the time with their dogs. I think it’s a unique race that allows you to run
with your pet.
>>NARRATOR: The student organizers believe the event would not have been a success without
the participation of the all the runners and contributions from sponsors including Purina,
GTM, Pepsi and Jimmy Johns.
>>JANELLE SCOTT: We would really like to thank everybody that came out and helped us, volunteers,
donors and the people who came to race, because we really appreciated it. We, everyday getting
e-mail, oh, there’s so many more runners, just get so excited so, its awesome to see
it turn out well, and to be done.
