Hi! My name is Joamette Gil, I'm a freelance comics letterer and colorist in Washington
State, and I'll be attending the Pacific Northwest College of Art as an illustration major starting
this September - or at least I will be if this campaign is successful. Even with the
seriously generous financial award given to me by PNCA, I am precisely $2270 short of
paying my fall tuition. Every penny I have is going toward relocating to Portland, OR,
in time for the start of the semester, and freelance comics work doesn't exactly rake
in the savings. It's taken me a long time to get to this point: I am 24 years old and
hold a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and social justice, which I pursued at the expense
of leaving the first art school I attended after just one year. A combination of financial
hardship, pressure from family and friends to pursue more "academic" studies, and personal
issues related to clinical depression all played into this decision. My time studying
psychology and social justice was and is priceless to me, it having enriched my life and sense
of self in radically transformative ways. But... I still strongly believe that my goal
to tell visual stories that center the lives of marginalized peoples would still benefit
immensely from a period of intensive, closely guided art practice in an art school setting.
All contributions of 10$ or more for this campaign come with the perk of increasingly
customized and complex works of art made by me, so please share this with all your friends
and help put me to work.
