A resource consent hearing
reviewing an application from a Ngati Tuwharetoa ki Kawerau trust
was held today.
The group wants to build
a geothermal power station on their land.
But their application
is being opposed by the Tuwharetoa Settlement Trust
and Mighty River Power.
Kereama Wright reports.
The notion to harness geothermal energy under this land
has been around since the 80s.
This is our goal now,
for the benefit of our grandchildren.
Leaders of this land started working
with the power company Eastlands five years ago.
$2 million was spent on applications
to the Bay of Plenty Regional Council,
and the Kawerau and Whakatane district councils.
But it's an application opposed by Mighty River Power,
Tuwharetoa Settlement Trust,
and Ngati Tuwharetoa Geothermal Assets Ltd,
at this week's four day hearing.
No one from either of the opposing parties
wanted to talk on camera.
But the statement of evidence
delivered on behalf of the Tuwharetoa Settlement Trust
stated concerns regarding transmissions lines
set to run over sacred lands.
Despite the objections, Te Ahi o Maui are optimistic.
The commissions are expected to give an outcome in three weeks,
but the losing side will still be able to object the result.
Kereama Wright, Te Karere.
