Hey everybody! How are you? Today we're going to go check out JW Corbett Wildlife Management Area.
This area is just outside of West Palm Beach.
We're going to meet up with a couple of biologists, Mike and Bob, and they're going to tell us all about the area.
So let's go pick their brains and see what we can learn. Let's Go!
Welcome to the JW Corbett Wildlife Management Area, my name is Bob Harris and I'm the lead Biologist here.
There is 60,320 acres.
The primary hunting opportunities on Corbett are...
For deer, hog, and Turkey. Which are Archery, Muzzleloading, and General Gun.
We also have an extended small game and spring turkey season.
...Also which are non-quota
The Corbett area is comprised of many diverse habitats.
Primarily we have pine flatwoods, depression marshes, cypress strand, and cypress dome.
which support a variety of wildlife species such as the red cockaded woodpecker, deer, turkey, bobwhite quail, and a variety of other species.
So one of he really important things about all the work we do out here with the red cockaded woodpecker,
is not only are we trying to help an endangered species recover but all of the land management and habitat restoration...
and all the resources we put towards this particular woodpecker directly benefits all the other wildlife that's associated out here.
So the intense prescribed burning that we do, any sort of mechanical vegetation to improve the habitat and restore it
back to conditions when fire was more frequent out here directly benefits white-tail deer, turkey, quail,
and all the other species that are associated with this particular habitat.
The Florida Atlantic University Everglades Youth conservation camp located within the Corbett area offers various environmental education related programs.
And in cooperation with FWC offers hunter safety courses throughout the year.
I have been fortunate enough to see all kinds of wildlife out here today.
Including some very cool birds, deer, some turtles, some really big alligators, a lot of fish.
I've seen some fisherman out there catching fish.
And it's a beautiful area, it's very diverse, and it's a big area.
So there's plenty of room for a lot of people out here to come out and enjoy the outdoors!
