A 22-year-old man has made a successful clinical negligence claim after having 11 healthy teeth
unnecessarily removed when he was eight years old.
Tony Sweeney's dentist had advised that he have one of his teeth removed in 1999, but
consultants at University Hospital Southampton indicated that they'd need to extract another
too, so put him under a general anaesthetic.
However, when he came out of the surgery, a further nine teeth had been taken out -- something
that the local NHS Trust couldn't justify. As a result, Tony has had to have expensive
corrective work as an adult and hardly had any teeth until 2002 when his adult set started
to emerge.
The £10,000 clinical negligence claim will go towards further work, as well as going
some way to compensate Tony for the self-image problems he encountered through having few
teeth.
